Vaughan Marshall saddles the favourite, TRIBAL DANCE (12/10), in this weekend’s Betting World Derby on Sunday 24 June 2012. The son of Tiger Dance was victorious in the East Cape Derby run at Arlington last time out, and will look to replicate that form in "KZN's" Derby. His top contender lies in SHOGUNNAR, who hails from the Gavin van Zyl yard and will be partnered by Keegan Latham. His price of 4/1 makes strong appeal as he is improving with each outing. His last run in the Daily News was super impressive as he was running on into third 4.25 lengths behind current July favourite Jackson and a neck behind Vettel. This is an intriguing contest and this small but potent derby field will keep us glued to our seats with anticipation. ![]() |
| IL Saggiatore (left) battled it out with Sage Throne in last year's Derby |
IL Saggiatore won last year’s race in the boardroom after original winner Sage Throne caused interference. It was a titanic struggle over the final two furlongs, and although Sage Throne crossed the finish line first, Mike De Kock's 11/10 favorite with Anton Marcus was awarded the race. With the scratching of CANTEBURY TALE from this year's race, neither will feature here.

WINNING FORM caught up with the various trainers who gladly gave their insight on the progress of their runners.
Trainer: Vaughan MarshallTRIBAL DANCE (12/10): "He is very well and has come back strong after his race in PE. He has thrived since arriving in KZN. I am expecting a big run from him."
Trainer: Greg Ennion
MASTER PLAN (9/1): "I think his run in the Daily News came too soon after his great run in the Betting World 1900. He has been doing very well since the Daily News and I expect him to be very competitive in this field."
Trainer: Gavin van ZylSHOGUNNAR (9/2): "He has come on since the Daily News 2000. Keegan Latham rode him before and after the Daily News 2000 and he told me, that in his opinion, SHOGUNNAR has definitely come on since the race. I am expecting him to run a big race."
Trainer: Yogas Govender
PREMIUM WOOD (9/1): "I was very pleased with his last win and he took that race very well. All I can say is, he is very fit, working well, I expect him to be a big challenger.
Trainer: Dean KannemeyerTAIPAN (7/2): "He is very well and I am very happy with him. I galloped him on the grass last Thursday and he worked very well. He's had two comeback runs since his win in the Cape back in November. I am expecting a big run from him. Dean certainly sounded very bullish about TAIPAN’s chance."
Trainer: Alyson Wright
PENHALIGON (25/1): Winning Form caught up with Kevin Wright was very bullish about PENHALIGON's chance. "We planned this race months ago and everything has gone according to plan. He is very well. He is distance suited and I am hoping for a really top run."
Trainer: Geoff WoodruffRED FORT (6/1): "He has had lots of work and a couple of grass gallops so I consider him fit enough to take his place in the race. My big fear is that he will decide to go to sleep in the stalls and get left again. He is temperamental so that is a problem. If he runs a place and comes through the race safe and sound I will be very happy."
Trainer: Herman Brown/Frank Robinson
IDAARA (50/1): Frank said, "He is very well and stays well and for this reason we are taking our chances in the race. I am not sure if he is quite up to it and I am not overly confident."
