WINNING FORM caught up with the various trainers who gladly gave their insight on the progress of their runners.

What The Trainers Say

Trainer: GARY ALEXANDER
PIERRE JOURDAN (15/1):
As usual Gary was open and frank and prepared to speak his mind. When asked how PIERRE JOURDAN took his last run when third behind Variety Club in the Gold Challenge at Clairwood, Gary enthusiastically said. “He took his run very well and pulled up well. He is not the type of horse who needs a lot of work. He will gallop on the 28th and that will bring him to his peak”.

When asked who he made his main dangers he said. “JACKSON is a lovely horse and is the horse we all have to beat.  I also feel that whatever is Mike de Kock’s  stable elect will run very well.”

Trainer: MIKE BASS
Trainer Mike Bass is a true professional and was very clear about his horses chances.

CASTLETHORPE (66/1): “CASTLETHORPE is very well and is enjoying his stay in KZN. I am not that happy about the 2½kgs penalty which he received for running second to Variety Club. I am not worried about the draw as he comes from off the pace but he is yet to win over this trip. All in all I am very happy with him”.

CHESALON (14/1): Asked how it came about that Jeff Lloyd would be riding CHESALON Mike said, “Jeff phoned from Australia and asked if I had a ride for him in the July. My two regular jockeys, Bernard Fayd’herbe and Karl Neisius would be riding Castlethorpe and English Garden so I was happy to put him on Chesalon. I had to take Chesalon out of the Met when he injured a ligament. It was not a serious  injury and he is now completely over it. In my opinion he is one of the few horses in the race with a realistic chance of beating Jackson”.

ENGLISH GARDEN (10/1): “ENGLISH GARDEN is the best in at the weights of my three horses. His two prep runs have been very good and I am very happy with him. He is now a much more mature horse. I have high hopes that he will improve on his third place last year.”

Trainer: SEAN TARRY
Sean Tarry, who is having what is probably the best season of his career, has 3 runners in the race.

GOLD ONYX (20/1)
: “He is very well and healthy and he pulled up well after his recent win in the Cup Trial. Jackson is the obvious horse to beat especially as he comes into the race very well weighted. I was disappointed that Gold Onyx was penalised 5 pounds for his latest win. Another horse I believe has had a very good July prep is English Garden who is well weighted.”

POMODORO (28/1): “I have not done a lot with him as he came from Gauteng fit and well after a tough campaign up there.”

WHITELINE FEVER (25/1): ”He is very fit and well and won his race on the 20th June, over 1400m, at Scottsville very easily. That trip is short of his best and he showed, when just over a length behind English Garden, over the Greyville 1800m, that he can run with the best of them.”

Trainer: TYRONE ZACKEY
SMANJEMANJE (45/1)
: Although we caught Tyrone busy working his horses on the track he was kind enough to spare the time to talk about Smanjemanje.”This morning  (Thursday 21st June) Grant van Niekerk worked him on the grass and was very happy with the work. He felt Smanje had improved since his third in the Jubilee when finishing behind Eton Square."

G
rant especially made the flight from Cape Town to ride work and his preparation has been meticulously planned. “Everything went wrong in the Met and that run must be ignored”, said Tyrone. “Since then he has blossomed and came into the Jubiliee needing the run after I rested him in preparation for his hard July prep.” Tyrone concluded by saying, ”I could not have asked for a better prep. He is as well as I can get him. Now we just need luck in running”.

Trainer: DENNIS DRIER

BEACH BEAUTY (15/1)
: Dennis did not mince his words when talking about BEACH BEAUTY. “I could not be happier with her. She took her last run in her stride and she has come on from that run. Jackson is, in my opinion, the horse to beat but Beach Beauty will be at her peak to do so”.

Trainer: VAUGHAN MARSHALL
Vaughan was his usual calm confident self when discussing his two runners Tales Of Bravery and Top Seller.

TALES OF BRAVERY (55/1)
“Tales Of Bravery was not at his best when fourth behind Variety Club in the Gold Challenge run over 1600m. That run has brought him along nicely and that plus his final gallop, which will be at Greyville next Thursday, will bring him to his peak. He is as game as they come and I expect him to be doing his best once again.”

TOP SELLER (45/1): Vaughan said TOP SELLER had come through his preparation, with the gallop at Greyville to come, with flying colours. “This is his biggest test yet and the race will show just what he can do.”

Trainer: BRETT CRAWFORD
JACKSON (2/1)
: Brett was surprisingly cool and calm when Winning Form spoke to him. "Having a horse like Jackson makes training and all that comes with it much easier," said Brett. “He has taken everything in his stride and I am very happy with him. He has had a good prep and will be as fit as hands can make him."

Brett added that in his opinion a horse should be well placed turning for home to win the July and that Jackson would be ridden accordingly. Racegoers can, therefore expect to see Jackson in the vanguard for most of the race. Karis Teetan has been working him every day for the past couple of weeks and he too, is very happy with his mount.

POLAR BOUND (50/1): "I am very happy with him and I think his gallop on Thursday morning was a nice one. He has a good draw and with normal luck in-running he could run into the quartets. From what I know of my two horses I would be very surprised if he beats Jackson, but there is nothing certain about horse racing."

Trainer: MIKE DE KOCK
SOLO TRAVELLER (33/1)
: “I was very disappointed with his last run but having said that his run over the Greyville 1900 the time before was much better. I must give him a chance on that,” said Mike.

VETTEL (11/1): Mike was very enthusiastic about VETTEL. “He had a massive run behind Jackson  in the Daily News. I think Jackson might have won a bit easier than it looked but even so Vettel comes into the race super fit. The further he goes the better, and he will not be stopping at the end. He has Anton Marcus so what more could I ask for."

ILHA BELA (9/1): “ILHA BELA is a top filly,” said Mike. “Her second behind Viva Maria does not detract from her chance as I eased up on her before the race and she was not at her top. I am not happy about her draw but am not going to let it worry me. She is very fit and very well and has Delpech riding who has won the last two July’s for me”.

GORONGOSA (9/1): Of GORONGOSA Mike was pretty philosophical. “She is a filly who knows how to win and I always like horses who know how to win. She will be running on and the only question mark is the trip as she is better over further”.

Trainer: GAVIN VAN ZYL

ETON SQUARE (28/1):
Talking about his exciting young prospect, ETON SQUARE, he said. “He is improving in leaps and bounds. After every run he gets better. In the July he will carry 53kgs and with that mass he should have a big chance”.

Trainer: ALEC LAIRD

ROYAL BENCHER (66/1)
“The fact that my horse will only be getting 2kgs from Jackson makes my horse’s chance much tougher. In his last race he banged himself up a bit and I had to take it easy on him for a while."

"The final gallop next Thursday will be very important to him to bring him to his peak. In all honesty I think Jackson will be very hard to beat but I am happy to take on the rest of the field.”

Trainer: COLIN SCOTT

SAGE THRONE (22/1): "He put up a very good gallop on Thursday morning and his jockey, Richard Fourie was also very happy with his work. He pulled up well and is eating up today. Realistically, he has a decent draw and with the work he has now shown us he could be a decent place bet especially as the tote is playing six places."

    2. I'm going for English Garden. Decent draw when the rest of the top horses are all way to far from the rail.

  5. I reckon Gold Onyx is going to pull this one off. The July is due an upset and if it runs like I know it can the draw can only help.

  7. Vettel will be tough to beat with Marcus on board.

  8. Jeff Lloyd is here for a reason. Chesalon is going to feature in all of my exotics.

  9. Delpech to make it 3 VDJ in a row on Ilha Bela for De Kock!

  10. I'm going to put my money on Chesalon, with Jeff Lloyd who's come from overseas and never won a July, this is his chance to prove he's still the best.

  11. Vettel for the win. Champion trainer, champion jockey. Even though Mr Marcus is not optimistic about winning, anything can happen on race day.

  12. I think it will be Jackson or English Garden taking it

  13. Cant see Jackson get beat(the son of the great Dynsty)

  14. ETON SQUARE and TOP SELLER are the two dark horses and come the big day my money will be on ETON SQUARE, he has drawn well and just keeps improving. JACKSON is class, but the July is due an upset!!!!

  15. Very, very tough July. To back Jackson at those odds, you need to see a doctor....

    July 2011
Igugu 55kg draw 10 price 2/1, Mike DK

    July 2012
    Jackson 57kg draw 18 price 17/10. Brett C

I think this could be a July to back 2-3 horses and be able to make a decent profit if any of them come in.

I'm playing wide, with flare and with aggression - then I'm going to pray. I just don't know which horses yet..... but there will be a few of them.

    1. Nice theory! But we cannot say for sure that Igugu is a better racehorse than Jackson.
The colt has done absolutely nothing wrong and champions can come from even the smallest of stables. The 1985 winner Gondolier was trained by Pat Antelme and the first million rand earner in SA, Model Man, was trained by Pat Lunn. Champion racehorses run well no matter who rides or trains them and Mike de Kock will tell you he's only as good as the horses he train.
      Good luck with your bets...

    2. Great insight guys! Dyanasty, the father of Jackson, I think that says it all! Whether he will be able to reproduce it on July Day from the 16th draw (when Dynasty did from the 20 draw!), one can only hope! Some are saying an upset is on the cards - I just think its going to be a cracking race!

    3. Mate please don't compare Jackson to igugu, when jack does what she has then spring ur step, igugu would have this field cold from inside draw 15 @ odds on with the rest at 6-1 upwards, all I hop us Pj with a lot of weight gives a good account that's my top EW selection, best of luck with 18/10

  19. Been away on holiday but managed to see my fancy didn't get best of draws. Nonetheless, others are worse off and it's time for the Greyville specialist, who should have been a lot closer behind Igugu in the Met, to step forward and pick up the big race win she's always looked capable of. The horse in question? - BEACH BEAUTY.

    ReplyDelete
  20. if igugu was in this yrs july ....who wub b fav?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Purely on merit ratings Jackson is the best handicapped horse in the field. And one must remember he turns 4 just three weeks after the July so he's thrown in even while carrying 57kg.
If Igugu was running this year she would have been carrying 60kg and if I recall correctly she was rated at 118 which still would have favoured Jackson. Like father like son - on paper he should emulate his dad's 2003 feat from a 20 draw no less!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nice comparison Smash, but the fact is: No 3 year old has ever won the Durban July carring 57kg. Like Germany never beating Italy in a major competition, my feelings are that Jackson might just have to much work to do here. Hope I'm proved wrong because SA needs a champion!

  22. When it comes to the Vodacom July millions are invested with the Bookies and if Jackson was a certainty, then he would be deep in the red, not 2/1. Trust me the race is wide, wide open. Don’t get me wrong, Jackson is top class, but the VJ is not just a feature race, it is a world class race and you are not only up against the conditions of a race, but also immense pressure. At the start ALL 20 runners are going to fight for a good position and drawn 16, he is going to race near the back. The pace is going to be on and into the home stretch, Jackson after switching out, if he has any intention of winning, he is going to have to make up 15 length +, within 300 meters. I really doubt he is going to manage this. If you think selecting the winner is hard, try selecting the quartet? This is going to pay bombs and will be well into the hundred thousand mark range? My fancy is Gold Onyx, English Garden, Vettel, Eton Square, Chesalon and Jackson (back end). I do believe these are the serious runners

    1. Great insight Rayner, and I agree - it's more than just a feature race! Was fantastic being at the gallops this morning, and you can see everyone is already getting into the Durban July vibe. JACKSON did look magnificent however, and SAGE THRONE probably have the best gallop. It's going to be a cracker July!

  23. Jackson has all the credentials but the draw is going to be a big influence. Eton Square and Beach Beauty could be the Jokers in the pack.

    Guys....Tales of Bravery
He has the services of the master, and he will just hold off Jackson. Felix has ridden so many big race winners, and he can steal this one, like he did the Summer cup a few years ago with Aslan. He almost stole the July with Buy and Sell too. At 40/1, excellent value bet.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jackson is definitely the horse to beat, but it won't be that easy..

English Garden & Beach Beauty will work him ALL THE WAY to the line!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. U guys trying to pinch my market? GORONGOSA!!!! With Shea up, only 53kg this mare is a massive runner. As DeKock says, she knows how to win. To be followed home by Jackson, PJ and Vettel - get on the quartet!!
    Happy punting

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jackson is the class act. Carrying 57 from draw 17 - not easy, particularly if they take the false rail in to 7 metres. However Gorongosa jumps with Shea from 10, carries 53.5, and has no issues with the distance, which may, in fact, may be too short. Nevertheless a lot more reasons to fancy her than not.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Eton Square very impressive last time out with a lot more improvement to come place money for me but my money is definately on English Garden, will be a deserved winner if Jackson can't get up!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ihla Bela could be the one they all have to beat.
Her last start she was caught in a pocket. Previous to that she cut through the Oaks field like a knife through hot butter.
With Anthony Delpech aboard it would be no surprise to see him capture yet another July title.....

  31. Guys take it from me. If Jeff Lloyd can call Mike Bass from Australia and ask which horse can he ride, it simply means Jeff and Mike have got a plan. CHESALON for me is the horse to bet for. Sthembelo

  33. Posted on Sporting Post this morning!

    Jackson Weds His Beach Beauty

The Duke of Castlethorpe announced in Top Seller Magazine that whoever retrieved his stolen Sage Throne would be rewarded with Gold Onyx and his only daughter’s hand in marriage. She was a Beach Beauty and had everyone Vettel for her attention at the Chesalon Festival at Pomodoro.
There were innumerable Tales Of Bravery in the process and competitors ranged from a Royal Bencher and Frenchman in Pierre Jourdan to a Gorongosa who succumbed to Whiteline Fever while he was Polar Bound.
Just as the Duke was about to console himself with never seeing his prized possession again, a Solo Traveller, from South Africa, saved the day! Two weeks later he was duly rewarded and a lavish wedding was held in an English Garden in Eton Square. When Jackson was asked when he would be taking his lovely bride, Ilha Bella, home he simply replied, “Smanjemanje!”

    1. That's incorrect. The last time a horse won the Durban July from the 20th draw was Dynasty in 2003. Robbie Fradd rode Dynasty that day. He rides Pierre Jourdan in this race. Dynasty is the sire of three horses in this race: Jackson, Beach Beauty, and Sage Throne.
