Ladbrokes Gold Cup 2012 Trainer Comments

Ladbrokes Gold Cup 2012 - Trainer Comments

The Winning Form team caught up with the trainers who have runners in this weekend's Ladbrokes Gold Cup.  They gladly shared their comments with us, giving us a good indication of their horse's chances in this 3200m Grade 1 race - the final feature of the 2011/2012 South African horse racing season. Just a reminder that with Hollywood you have the option of 3, 4, 5 or 6 fixed odds places for this year's Gold Cup! Let's see what the trainers have to say.

Ladbrokes Gold Cup 2012
Trainer Comments

Trainer: GAVIN VAN ZYL

SEAL (12/1): With SEAL still in Johannesburg Chesney van Zyl gave us the info about SEAL. "I am very happy with the way he is working since his last great win in the Gold Vase. He took that run very well and I could not be happier with him." When asked who he thought he would have to beat to win the Gold Cup, Chesney replied “Whatever beats SEAL will win the race.”

Trainer: GEOFF WOODRUFF

PRINCESS OF LIGHT (20/1): "She is drawn well and jockey Mienie will be able to have her well placed turning for home. A strong pace will suit her but the only doubt is how she handles the Greyville track as she prefers a strong galloping track. She leaves for Durban on Tuesday morning."

SOUL MASTER (25/1): "He ran below form behind Tribal Dance last time as he jumped from a bad draw. He likes to race from off the pace and if he gets a strong pace he could run into the money."

Trainer: COLIN SCOTT

SAGE THRONE (12/1): In recent weeks Colin Scott's SAGE THRONE has become something of a talking horse in the race. Colin said that SAGE THRONE had taken his July run very well and his work has been first class. He said that both he and jockey Sean Cormack are convinced that SAGE THRONE is crying for the 3200m trip. A really big run is expected from him.

Trainer: VAUGHAN MARSHALL

TOP SELLER (35/1): He said that TOP SELLER had disappointed in the July after never overcoming the effects of a bad draw. Despite this he had shown no ill effects from the July run and was now working as well as ever. He needs a decent pace to give of his best and, as it seems likely he will get this pace, he could be in the firing line.

Trainer: CORINNE BESTEL

SUN CITY (66/1) : "I have had SUN CITY for about two and a half months now and he is very ready for his big day. He was especially sent to me from the Cape to be prepared for the Gold Cup and I am very happy with the way he has come on. He is a lovely horse with a beautiful temperament. Glen Hatt will suit him ideally as he is a horse who needs a vigorous ride especially from his very bad outside draw. Obviously he is going to need a lot of luck in running."

Trainer: SEAN TARRY

ASLAN (25/1): "He is very fit and I think it is best to ignore his last run when the pace was too slow for him. He is a difficult customer but he stays well and if he gets a decent pace he could still surprise us."

KOLKATA (7/1): "He has had a very good prep and needed his last run quite badly. He wasn't fit enough, then, to win over 3000m and that run would have brought him on alot. With Strydom riding him I give him a good each/way chance."

Trainer: MIKE BASS

CROC VALLEY (50/1): "CROC VALLEY will be having her last run before going to stud." Mike thinks she should get the trip and gives her a place chance.

THANKS JOHN (40/1): "He was drawn badly when never getting into the race behind SEAL in the Gold Vase. He is well in at the weights and for this reason I give him a definite place chance."

GOLDEN PARACHUTE (66/1): "He won two good races in Port Elizabeth before running poorly in the P.E. Gold Cup. He is well but will need luck in running to have a chance."

JEPPE'S REEF (40/1): "He would be my stable elect if he was better drawn. Unfortunately he is drawn one from the outside which makes his task a big one. I am also worried about him having to make up ground down the short Greyville straight."

Trainer: DEAN KANNEMEYER

BLAKE (5/1): Dean was very happy with BLAKE and said that he had had a fantastic prep for the race. On Monday morning (23 July) he worked a mile on the dirt and pulled up really well. Like Chesney he also felt that whoever beats him will win the race.

IN WRITING (13/1): IN WRITING did it the hard way last time when leading for most of the trip. He took that run very well and is spot on for the big race on Saturday. When asked how he would run IN WRITING in the race he said he would leave it to jockey Felix Coetzee who knows exactly how to win the Gold Cup.

Trainer: CORNE SPIES

HEYOUNEVERKNOW (22/1): Corne was very bullish about HEYOUNEVERKNOW's chance. "She is exceptionally well and took her last run in her stride. She has a lovely draw and I expect her to be well placed throughout the race. She was running on behind SEAL in the Gold Vase and if she can again run on in that fashion she could be involved in the finish. She will be arriving in Durban on Thursday evening."

CAMPO DE SANTANA (50/1): "I am happy with his condition. He, too was running on strongly behind SEAL in the Gold Vase and with his light mass he could run into the money."

Trainer: MIKE DE KOCK

Mike De Kock was unavailable for comment and his assistant Nathan Kotzen kindly gave us these comments:

ILSANPIETRO (11/1): "He is very well and he had a nice prep run when fourth behind Seal in the Gold Vase over 3000m. He has come on nicely since then and he should run a good race."

CAPTAIN’S WILD (13/1): "He is very badly drawn. His last two runs have been very frustrating as he ran a little below expectations. This 3200m trip should suit him."

GORONGOSA (8/1): "She is a very nice filly who knows how to win. She shows nothing in work but always runs well in her race."

VETTEL (11/2): "He is a very nice three year old who is getting stronger all the time. I don’t think he will have any trouble getting this 3200m trip and i give him a good each/way chance. I make this a very open race."
