As Shaheen Shaw put it, racing on Saturday at Greyville was "like getting six of the best at the Prinicpal's office." It was a very tough day's racing for all punters, but for those who backed POMODORO in the Vodacom Durban July, they will be smiling from ear-to-ear. The Sean Tarry trained colt was ridden to perfection by Pierre "Striker" Strydom, who took the issue of the draw completely out of the equation winning the race from the widest stall gate of them all and rewarding punters with a 33/1 pay-out! However this is a new week, and there is new money to be made! eMeM from Winning Form provides us with his best bets for the upcoming week. ![]() |

Mon: Fairview
Tue: Scottsville
Wed: Kenilworth
Thur: Vaal
Fri: Fairview (ABANDONED)
Sat: Clairwood
Sat: Borrowdale
Sun: Turffontein
The highlight of this weekend's racing of course will be the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint at Clairwood on Saturday. It's joint favorites that currently top the betting boards with DELAGO DELUXE and WHAT A WINTER both available at 5/2. However eMeM reckons the value lies in the MJ Byleveld ridden RUSHING WIND. See his reasons why below!
Monday: Fairview - Race 4 - TROUBLE AGAIN - 5/1
"TROUBLE AGAIN looks the part in this field. The son of Kahal got going too late when beaten just over two lengths over 1800m at Arlington ten days ago. This extra furlong on this longer run-in will suit him much better, and he drops heavily in class."
(Result: TROUBLE AGAIN finished 2nd on Monday! Good place bet!)
Tuesday: Scottsville - Race 2 - VIA AFRICA - 14/10
"VIA AFRICA raced green on debut over this distance but was running on nicely and finished runner up, beaten just over two lengths by fellow newcomer and highly regarded Schiffer (Ed: Schiffer ran 3rd on Saturday at Greyville in the Gr 1 Golden Slipper!"). Her trainer's horses usually make good improvement with racing, and this daughter of Var could take some beating here."
(Result: VIA AFRICA won the race by 7 lengths! SP at 1/1!)
Wednesday: Kenilworth - Race 2 - HOTTOJETTO - 33/20
"HOTTOJETTO made an eye-catching debut when he raced in touch throughout before being outrun late into third, beaten two lenghts over 1000m on this course in early June. The well-related son of Jet Master would have benefited from the experience and should have lots of improvement to come."
(Result: HottoJetto ran 4th - tough day of racing at Kenilworth)
Thursday: Vaal Sand - Race 1 - GEMMAYZE STREET - 5/2
"GEMMAYZE STREET was carded to run at Turffontein last Saturday (Ed: He ran 3rd on Saturday 2.50 lengths off the winner HeavenIsARaceHorse). He is must better than his recent form and rallied gamely for second behind subsequent winner Desert Sheik in his best career performance in May. His sire's progeny usually take to this surface and he could be the right one if handling the sand. He gets a handy draw and Gavin Lerena in the irons."
(Result: GEMMAYZE STREET WON! Only paid R2.50 on the tote, so hope you got the 5/2!)
Friday: Fairview - Race 5 - COME HOME SMOKIN
"COME HOME SMOKIN has his issues but is unbeaten from his two career outings to date. The son of Var returned from a 33 week layoff with a bang as he showed pace before keeping going well to beat subsequent runner-up Pine Valley over this trip in plated company. He was given the maximum penalty but should strip much fitter today and may well be much higher than his current rating. He will again enjoy the services of a 2.5kg apprentice claim on his handicap debut."
RACING ABANDONED
Saturday: Clairwood - Race 6 - LOOK AFTER ME - 9/2
"LOOK AFTER ME relished the extra as he drew off to comfortably win over 2400m at Scottsville six weeks ago. He may have escaped with only a four pound penalty and clearly looks on the up. He will again benefit from a 2.5kg apprentice claim and should take some beating."
Saturday: Clairwood - Race 8 - Mercury Sprint (Gr 1) - RUSHING WIND - 12/1
"RUSHING WIND was very impressive when he bounced back to winning ways over a mile on this course last time. The victory margin clearly flatters the runner-up. The son of Windrush has proven his versatility and was running on well for fifth in a Grade 1 behind DELAGO DELUXE in his penultimate effort at Scottsville despite being unfavorably drawn. He was slightly unlucky when just out of the placings in this race last year but should give a very good account of himself here."
Sunday: Turffontein - Race 3 - PEANUTS - 12/10
"Peanuts was given the unkindest cut of all after he never shaped in the Grade 1 at Scottsville last time. The son of Var is obviously highly regarded by his conditioner (Roy Magner) and showed plenty of promise in his two prior starts. He drops heavily in class today and should take a power of beating if the gelding has had the desired effect."
