It’s the first weekend of January, and that means only one thing. It’s time for the FA Cup. Who doesn’t love a good underdog story, a spot of giant-killing here and there? Your money and your status won’t help you here. For every multi-million pound superstar you put out on the field there is a part-time McDonalds employee, who plays for the love of the game, willing to give him a good kicking. This is the glory of the Cup, where you’re weaknesses will be exploited by a pack of jackals that are willing to scrap to the death for just one more chance of glory. God it’s a glorious competition.Friday, 6 January 2012

Weekend Sports Preview
It's the first weekend of the new year, and that can mean only one thing. The glory and prestige of the FA Cup returns for another year. If you can find yourself a lovely little upset, a good start to the year is well within your grasp. The PGA and European Tour also return with golf in our own backyard. And then of course football on the continent returns after the winter break. Well I'm pleased as punch, my options were running a bit thin. So have a read, find a bet and have a good start to the year. All these write-ups

Hyundai Tournament of Champions, 5 - 8 January, Kapalua on Maui
As with the Africa Open, a host of players have decided to sit this one out and begin their season later in January. There are still a host of stars to watch though and the prize money as well as the invitation to compete at the Masters which is on offer for those who have not yet received their invite will ensure this is a hotly contested tournament. Before we start remember the short field means bookies will only be paying four places…. With that in mind let’s find the value.

The Africa Open, Sunshine Tour, 5 - 8 January, East London Golf Club
The 2012 Race to Dubai tees off this weekend and despite many of the top contenders deciding to take an extended break and give this one a miss, there is still plenty to look forward to at the East London Golf Club. A win here is a great start to the year and those who have made the effort to shake off the New Year hangover could be richly rewarded. Keep an eye on the locals, I have a feeling it will be one of them who takes 1st place this year. The question is which one?

India 24/10 to Level Series
Australia vs India, 2nd Test Match, 3-7 Jan, 01:00
With the aftermath of Boxing Day well and truly out of the way,
the New Years test of this riveting series has the potential to be even more of
a humdinger. Australia claimed a 1-0 lead in the series with their victory at
the MCG, but there were many stages of the game where things could have gone
either way. Neither team can be said to have dominated the match, though a
122-run victory to the Australians will suggest they did. This result was
managed through a great display of Australian fast bowling, by Ben Hilfenhaus in
the first innings and by the young James Pattinson in the second. The Indian
team will be disappointed at not putting up more of a fight in the second
innings, where the total they had to chase was not an excessively elusive one.

South Africa 9/20 Look to Bounce Back at Newlands
South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Sunfoil Test, 3 - 7 Jan, 10:30
It is the beginning of a New Year; time for resolutions that are left by the wayside after a few weeks of dedication. Time for changes and mental adjustments that leave behind parts of ourselves that we no longer wish to entertain. Time to change the perceptions of others about ourselves. It may be the start of a new year, but the Proteas are still the laughing-stock of international cricket. Their loss in Durban may be described as an upset, a shock defeat, a lapse in judgement. It may be called all these things, but can never be called uncharacteristic.
