Just Give Me a Lille Bit More

Marseille v Lille – Sunday 15th January – Stade Velodrome (22:00)

The French Ligue 1 returns this weekend after a 3 week end of year break. This weekend marks the first gameweek in the second round. The clash of the weekend see’s Marseille host league champions Lille. 2009/10 Champions Marseille had to settle for a runners-up medal last season after finishing 8 points behind champions Lille. After a slow start this season they have found some good form and got themselves back in the title race, which looks very open so far. They trail 3rd placed Lille by 5 points and have the opportunity to cut that lead down to 2 points.

It's Derby Time at the San Siro

AC Milan v Inter Milan- Sunday 15th January – San Siro (21:45)

The historic Milan derby is in town this weekend and as usual the significance of this encounter is incredible as this tie can prove decisive in crowning the eventual champions of the season. Both teams are in great form and this encounter is expected to go down to the wire.

Proteas out to make it 2 from 2

South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI, Sat 14th Jan, 10:00, Buffalo Park

An easier victory than anyone could have expected has thrust the Proteas into a 1-0 lead in the five match ODI series against Sri Lanka. The Proteas thrashed the Sri Lankans by a tremendous 258 runs, dismissing the opposition for their lowest ODI total, a diminutive 43. The Proteas never looked behind the game, expect briefly once where their fat ex-captain Graeme Smith was dismissed for 6, yet again flailing away outside the off stump and nicking off. Otherwise, their batting in the middle order was flawless, a century for Amla being the crowning jewel.

Australia 13/20 to close series

Australia vs India, 3rd Test, 13 - 17 January 2012, 04:30, WACA

History always has a funny way of repeating itself. Four years ago saw the Australians with a 2-0 lead at the same stage of this historic 4-match series, and also saw the Indians put both the losses and the highly controversial Monkeygate scandal behind them and go on to claim their only victory of the tour. Four years later the playing climate is a much different one. India’s batting thus-far has been in tatters, having been bowled out for less than 200 twice in four innings. Tendulkar is still in search of his 100th hundred as he is without a century yet on tour. Luckily for the Little Master, he isn’t the only one.

Weekend Sports Preview

The sporting year is in full swing already with plenty of action coming your way over the weekend. The summer of cricket continues with both test and ODI's, while the Premier League returns along with a couple of mouth-watering matches from Europe. There are not many bigger derbies than the one between Inter and AC Milan, which is certainly the highlight of the weekends action. Then, come Monday, the first grandslam of the year starts down under, and there is plenty of value throughout the draw, especially on the womens side. Choi to Shine at Sony Open

The Sony Open, PGA Tour, 12 - 15 January, Waialae

This weekend the US PGA gets into full swing as a strong field tee off in Waialae, Honolulu. This tight, par 70 course demands a high degree of accuracy off the tee and even higher GIR % so look away from the big hitters and focus on those who can hit fairways and are accurate with the shorter irons. The weather predictions show that wind should be relatively light so low scores are to be expected. The last point is that the tournament seems to favour the older, more experienced players. They have the mental temperament to avoid blowing up and scoring double bogies so I’m going to stay away from the young guns for once and back some of the oldies.

Coetzee to Conquer Joburg Open

The Joburg Open, Co-Sanctioned, 12 - 15 January, The Royal Johannesburg

The co-sanctioned Joburg Open tees off this weekend in Johannesburg for what promises to be a scorching weekend of golf. Since its inception in 2007 the tournament has favoured the South African players with Charl Schwartzel winning in 2011 and 2010 and Richard Sterne taking the gold in 2008. Notable performances by the like of Garth Mulroy (runner up in ’11 and ’08) and Andrew McLardy (’07 and ’09) show that it is not only the top South Africans that perform here. Rather, there is value to be found in the up and comers. The question is which ones?

South Africa 4/10 to Get the Jump on Lankans

South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 1st ODI, Wednesday 11th January 2012, 14:30, Paarl

After witnessing as enigmatic a test series as we just have between these two teams, a one-day series can come as a bit of an anti-climax. Test cricket is exactly what the name states, a test of character and ability. By the time the one-day series comes around people have started to lose interest in the battle, between both teams and players. However, in the modern era, one-day cricket has become a different ball game. Teams change drastically from the ones showcased on the test arena, tactics and strategies are different and micro-managed to a 50 over format.
