International Friendlies Preview

The European football season is over, or is it? Just when the players thought they could have themselves a well-deserved rest on their yacht in Monte Carlo, sipping champagne with P.Diddy while watching the Monaco Grand Prix, a curveball comes their way. Instead they’ll be travelling to the Ukraine and Poland to play yet more football. Before they do that though, they’ll play a series of friendly matches to get them up to speed with their international colleagues. International football is a different beast, especially friendlies which are often scrappy, forgettable affairs due to the constant rotation of players. A different approach is required and I intend to divulge a couple of my secrets for your betting pleasure. For all you know I could be making this up as I go along, but I’m not, trust me.

Nedbank Cup Final Preview

SuperSport United vs Mamelodi Sundowns, Saturday 26th May, 15:00, Orlando Stadium

The Nedbank Cup Final will close what has been another enthralling ABSA Premiership season which saw Orlando Pirates retaining their title last weekend. Its looks to be an exciting final with rivals SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns contesting the Tshwane derby. The match will be hosted at Orlando Stadium with both sides looking to end the season with a piece of silverware. The rivalry between the two clubs is fierce but friendship is always maintained between supporters of the two sides.

Sharks vs Stormers Super 15 Preview

Sharks vs Stormers, Super 15, Saturday 26th May, 19:10, Mr Price Kings Park

The intense battle for South African Conference domination turns towards a mouth-watering clash in Durban this weekend, between two teams with completely different winning mentalities. The pragmatic efficiency of the conference-topping Stormers comes face-to-face with a rejuvenated Sharks franchise, in what promises to be a derby date to remember.

Super Rugby Round 14 Preview

So with the European football season drawing to a close, I figured why not try my hand at this Super Rugby thing. I mean there are only two possible results (no draws here) and you get those handy handicaps. I can see the doubt already beginning to build, “Oh god, this football nut knows fok-all about rugby.” But that, my brothers, is certainly not the case. Yes I may be guilty of wearing black and white-tinted glasses from time to time, but I promise to leave my allegiances at the door and “call them as I see them”. So let’s kick this thing off then.

Delhi Daredevils vs Chennai Super Kings – IPL Preview

The Delhi Daredevils get a second shot at glory as they face up against the winners of last night’s Eliminator, Chennai Super Kings. The Daredevils lost their first qualifier to an intense Knight Riders team, and the winner of this encounter will test their mettle against the finalists on the biggest stage. Expect DLF Maximums, Kamran Kamaal Catches, and all the other insipid jargon we have come to know from the IPL, as a feast of T20 cricket awaits.

England vs West Indies - 2nd Test Preview

England vs West Indies, Investec 2nd Test, 25th - 29th May, Trent Bridge, 11:45

The past few weeks have been a mental and emotional rollercoaster ride. The paradoxical state of mind that sport can force a person into is a beautifully terrible thing, exposing the being to a psychotic tug-of-war between the head and the heart. The West Indies do this to me. From one side the improvements and constant ‘positive’ rhetoric of Darren Sammy reassures, it gently calms the idle supporter into a false sense of team-building and never-say-die attitudes. Amid this heady brew, this sportswriter grows uncomfortable. You can’t polish a turd. And Darren Sammy, no amount of sugar-coating will disguise the fact that your charges are going nowhere slowly.

Crowne Plaza Invitational Preview

Crowne Plaza Invitational, 24 May- 27 May, Colonial Country Club

It’s rare to see an event on the European Tour eclipse one of the PGA Tour events, but this weekend is one of those occasions. Although most of golf’s big names have elected to head to Wentworth for the BMW Championship this week, the Crowne Plaza has managed to draw a host of great players, so don’t ignore this one. The historic Colonial Country Club plays host once again and has done so since 1946. In this time few non Americans have managed a win here, the last being Rory Sabbatini in 2007, but since he's such a tool I don’t consider him to be a South African player anyway. Who has it in them to win this historic event? Let’s try find out.

BMW Championship Preview

BMW Championship, 24 May- 27 May, Wentworth

The historical BMW Championship tees off this week at Wentworth in Surrey and as usual it promises to be a cracker of an event. Founded in 1995, the tournament has traditionally drawn a host of big names and the list of winners includes the likes of Luke Donald, Paul Casey and Miguel Angel Jimenez. The par 71, 7,261 yard course has been the scene of some epic battles, most notably the one which took place last year when Luke Donald narrowly edged out Lee Westwood in a scintillating play-off. It’s moments like these that make golf the game it is and one can only hope this year will offer the same level of excitement that last year did. Who has it in them to win the big one? Let’s try find out.

Chennai Super Kings vs. Mumbai Indians – Eliminator Preview

No matter what happens in the Qualifier between Delhi and Kolkata, one of these teams is going to have to play both of them in order to win this competition. The winner of this contest goes on to face the loser of the first playoff in order to reach the final. If all goes to plan, there they will meet the winner of the first qualifier. A bit convoluted, I agree, but that is the punishment enacted for finishing out of the top two in this competition. With that in mind, it is time for me to lay Wednesday out for you…

Copa Del Rey Final Preview

Athletic Bilbao vs Barcelona, Friday 25th May, 20:00, Vicente Calderon Stadium

The final game of the Spanish La Liga season sees Barcelona take on Athletic Bilbao in the 108th Copa del Rey final on Friday evening at the Vincente Calderon Stadium, home of Atletico Madrid. Both sides will be looking to end their season on a positive note after suffering disappointments both domestically and in Europe. Barcelona finished the league second to rivals Real Madrid and were knocked out the UEFA Champions League at the semi-final stage by eventual winners Chelsea. Bilbao never really got going in the league finishing 10th but did have some success in the UEFA Europa League, only to lose out in the final against Atletico Madrid.

Delhi Daredevils vs Kolkata Knight Riders IPL Preview

Due to the ridiculously packed group stage schedule of this glitz and glamour tournament, covering it in terms of betting previews has been a next-to-impossible task. What I did do, is give you an analysis of how to make some money during the ram-jam humdrum that is the group stages. However, after witnessing the see-saw nature in which teams attempt to qualify for the playoffs; the business end of the tournament begins to take shape. This is where we find ourselves located now, with one of these two franchises set to ascend into the final, where all the hard work over the past six weeks or so hopefully pays off.

The month of May brings to an end many things in football, but when it comes to South African racing, it means the start of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Champions Season.
