POMODORO and jockey Pierre Strydom shocked the packed crowd at Greyville on Saturday when they arose victorious at the 2012 Vodacom Durban July. The 33/1 shot was given no chance after he was drawn at 20 (the widest stall gate of them all), and was beaten by more than 5 lengths in his previous run by the favorite Jackson. However he snuck the race by a nose over Tyrone Zackey's 66/1 horse SMANJEMANJE, handing trainer Sean Tarry and owner Chris van Niekerk their first ever Durban July victory. This is the 3rd time Pierre "Striker" Strydom has won the Durban July, his first being on London News in 1996, and his last on Trademark in 2001. Jackson finished in a very dissappointing 16th postion, more than 9.50 lengths behind the winner.Saturday, 7 July 2012

Sri Lanka vs Pakistan | 8 July | Pallekele, Kandy | 06:45
The game of cricket hasn’t had the greatest week. Rain has been pouring in England and in Sri Lanka, between the bursts of unbearable heat. Camels would be better off playing cricket in the Sri Lankan heat, and it would probably make for more interesting viewing. Don’t get me wrong, I like to see a stylish century as much as anybody. But these draws in Colombo are getting a bit much aren’t they? Somewhere last week I had the feeling the Pakistani’s would lose their bottle. I was wrong.

England vs Australia 4th ODI Preview
England vs Australia | 7 July | Chester-le-Street, Durham | 11:30
Rain tarnished England’s chances of becoming the world’s number one cricket side in all forms of the game, and I can tell you that this cricket writer is one happy man. Not that I am biased much. It is also lifted my spirits knowing now that all the Aussies can now do is draw this one-day series, and it looks a bit of a stretch at that. With all the rain forecast for the remainder of the series, it’s all looking pretty grim in England. All I can say is the sun better be smiling when the South Africans arrive. I don’t want any excuses.

British Grand Prix Preview
British Grand Prix | Formula 1 | Friday 6th - Sunday 8th July | Silverstone
Formula 1 returns to its spiritual home this weekend, the place where it all began, Silverstone. A reformatted World War II airfield, Silverstone hosted the first ever Grand Prix, way back in 1950. Since then there have been some memorable races, but none more so than the 2003 British Grand Prix, where a right nutter and part-time priest decided to play in the traffic, despite that traffic being Formula 1 cars heading down a straight at 280 km/h. What followed was a maniacal race, with Rubens Barrichello ultimately winning from pole, despite the lead changing at least 5 times. Can a race like that really be topped? With all that has gone before us this season, it may not be out of the question.

The Greenbrier Classic | 5 - 8 July | Old White TPC
The Greenbrier Classic is only in its third year on Tour but has drawn an amazing field this week. Tiger Woods, Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson and a host of other big names will take to the course to battle it out for a share of the $6 million prize fund. The par 70 7,210 yard course was destroyed by Stuart Appleby in 2010 when he won with a final score of -22, so expect low scores. This also means consistency will be rewarded. Who has it in them to win here? Let’s try find out.

The Open de France | European Tour | 5th - 8th July 2012 | Le Golf National
The European Tour heads to France this week for the historic Open de France. This one has been part of the Tour’s schedule since the tour’s inception in 1972 and although it was originally played at a different course each year, it is now regularly played at Le Golf National. A large prize fund generally draws a strong field and this year is no exception as Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and a host of other big names compete for a share of the 3 million euros on offer. This par 71, 7 300 yard course has seen some very low scores so expect much of the same this year. Whose score will be lowest come Sunday afternoon? Let’s try find out.

Durban July - Memorable Moments by Jimmy Lithgow
Jimmy Lithgow's Most Memorable Durban July Moments
After noticing an error in one of our facts on our Durban July Facts and Trivia post, we sent an email to Tellytrack presenter Jimmy Lithgow thanking him for spotting it out. The error he had spotted was where we had said that Karl Neisus had got his first and only July winner in 1991 on board Spanish Gaillard. This of course was incorrect as the horse Karl had won on was Flaming Rock! Jimmy explains how he knew we were wrong, "I was at both of the July’s in question, when Flaming Rock won, and when Spanish Galliard won (1992). As a matter of fact, my son, Aidan, subsequently took over Spanish Galliard, when he retired, to train him up as a lead horse at Greyville." Jimmy went on to provide us with his best memories of the Durban July, providing great nostalgia for all racing lovers.

West Indies vs New Zealand | 5 July | Kingston, Jamaica | 16:20
The West Indian blitzkrieg rained upon the Black Caps in Florida, as they went down 2-0 in the T20 leg of the tour. It will not get much easier for the New Zealanders as they travel to the Caribbean, and a plethora of injuries and niggles will mean their squad is not at 100%. The West Indians have looked frighteningly good of late, and this series will be the perfect opportunity for them to get one over their fellow minnows.

Durban July - Most Memorable Moments
Most Memorable Durban July
After 115 July handicaps, WINNING FORM thought it would be a good idea to ask a few prominent racing people about which they felt were their most memorable Julys’. They include the former tipster and handicapper Matthew Lips, former Durban July winning trainer Terrence Millard, champion jockeys Michael "Muis" Roberts and Garth Puller, as well as Patrick Lunn, Dave Scott, Robbie Hill, Bartie Leisher, Terrence Kannemeyer and Robbie Thompson. There are some great memories of the Durban July, and these are by far some of the best.

The Week In Sport
Monday 2nd July - Sunday 8th July 2012
The marathon European football season finally came to an end over the weekend, with the Spanish defending their European Championship title with a mesmerizing performance as they saw off Italy 4-0 in what ended up an extremely one-sided final. Speaking of never-ending season's - Super Rugby continued to limp towards the knock-out stages, with the Crusaders coming unstuck against a fired up Hurricane's outfit, with Tom Taylor's last minute penalty falling agonizingly short.

England vs Australia - 3rd ODI Preview
England vs Australia | 4th July | Edgbaston, Birmingham | 14:45
No longer are the English the pitiful, frightened mice, scattering frantically in all directions as the Australians dive-bomb their parade with their mighty talons. It's not a great change, but it will have to do. I can't say I'm particularly fond of either of these teams, and the more bloodshed the better as far as I'm concerned. But sentiment clouds a betting head, and there is no doubt that we are here to make money. Let's see how we can do that, and if England can clinch the series.
