Magic Tips Best Bets
Jockey: Grant BEHR - Trainer: Eric SANDS
VADE MECUM almost went off at triple figure odds on her debut over this trip at Kenilworth towards the end of last season but nonetheless, she produced a highly promising effort. The daughter of Modus Vivendi was outpaced in the early stages but she finished strongly and was beaten just over a length into third. The runner-up gave that form a mighty boost when she led throughout her next start to beat some useful rivals quite comfortably. The Eric Sands inmate would have come on nicely with that experience under her belt and a big run is expected. The obvious worry is how she will handle the turn from a wide draw.
Race 4: TRADE EMBLEM(2) - TOP BET
Jockey: Jason SMITSDORFF - Trainer: Shane HUMBY
TRADE EMBLEM loves this c & d and is much better than his last effort. He tired over the final furlong that day after having to overcome a wide draw and was rested 14 weeks. He had promising form prior to that and is versatile, as was evident when he led throughout to easily win over this c & d, three runs back. The son of National Emblem has done well racing fresh in the past and he has the early speed to overcome his wide draw. He won't have things easy but the 2.5kgs apprentice claim will help a great deal and he could still prove hard to peg back.
Race 8: IN THE FAST LANE(2)
Jockey: Richard FOURIE - Trainer: Justin SNAITH
IN THE FAST LANE looks an exciting young prospect and is a serious contender for top three-year old honours in the Cape this season. She caught the eye with an impressive finish for fourth on her handicap debut over this trip in heavy conditions at Kenilworth last time. She ended up just under two lengths behind BONIFACE on that occasion but meets that rival on 2kgs better terms and would have improved significantly since. She was withdrawn when carded to race at Kenilworth on 04/09 due to her not eating up but her trainer is obviously satisfied with her progress since. She trotted up to win her maiden by almost ten lengths at this venue in her penultimate outing. She has drawn well at gate 3 and could take a power of beating.
Race 9: DUST IN THE WIND(2)
Jockey: Stallone NAIDOO - Trainer: Piet STEYN
DUST IN THE WIND is holding his form and runs well for this 2.5kgs claiming apprentice. He stayed on nicely for second against older rivals over nine furlongs in heavy conditions last time and has no issues with this slight drop in trip. The son of Windrush is again handily drawn and should go very close in this field.
Jockey: Christopher PULLER - Trainer: Paul REEVES
There are a few natural pacesetters here and that will ensure a fast run race. This is sure to suit the runners that come from off the speed and NONKI POO is one such runner. The daughter of Stagelight didn't enjoy her winter campaign in KZN but had an eye-catching comeback run on her return to her home province. She contested the Final Fling Stakes from a wide draw over nine furlongs last time and ran on nicely for a close sixth, beaten under two lengths. She was penalized six pounds for that effort but drops in class and is handily drawn at barrier 4. She merits healthy respect and could represent excellent each/way value.
