Magic Tips Best Bets
Jockey: Raymond DANIELSON - Trainer: Geoff WOODRUFF
THE CAPTAIN'S TUNE is improving quickly and could develop into a high class three-year old. He was an impressive winner over older rivals over this trip last time and has loads of scope for improvement. The Woodruff charge clearly prefers the standside course but he has the most scope in this event and can still pull this off. He is only slightly out at the weights with the four-year old EARL OF DERBY.
Race 5: SMART CALL(4) - TOP BET
Jockey: Weichong MARWING - Trainer: Alec LAIRD
SMART CALL has blossomed smartly with racing and she would have strengthened during her nine week break. The daughter of Ideal World is preparing for the upcoming Fillies Guineas but her conditioner has found the perfect race for her to achieve her second career win. She finished a creditable 3rd behind subsequent Grade 1 winner Majmu over seven furlongs in her penultimate run and was outrun late in another feature over this trip, four weeks later. She is extremely well treated by the weights and had two promising attempts on this inside course. The Alec Laird inmate should take a power of beating.
Race 9: SILVER SCOOTER(1)
Jockey: Weichong MARWING - Trainer: Ormond FERRARIS
SILVER SCOOTER had a brief lean spell but he has shown encouragement in his last two starts. The Silvano gelding likes this track and he stayed on for 2nd behind a smart sort over a mile after racing handy, recently. The 3rd placed runner did the form little favour when finishing unplaced next time out but the Ferraris inmate will prefer this slight drop in trip and he gets Marwing in the irons once more. He has another midfield barrier to assist him.
Jockey: Juan-Paul v.d.MERWE - Trainer: Michael AZZIE
GRAND OPERA has made solid improvement since being gelded in the Spring. He finished a creditable 3rd behind subsequent winners at the Vaal in his comeback run and then followed that up with a gutsy last effort over nine furlongs on this track, three weeks ago. The runner-up could only manage a weak 2nd next time out, but that was on the sand, so little should be read into that formline. Besides, this son of Silvano has lots of scope for more improvement and this drop to the mile could be ideal for him. He is drawn well and will be cherry-ripe on his third run after the rest.
