Race 6: MULBERRY BAY(14)
Magic Tips Best Bets
Jockey: Weichong MARWING - Trainer: Mike DE KOCK
This is a tricky conditions contest as the class act PINE PRINCESS undoubtedly prefers an extra furlong. The De Kock inmate showed just that when she ran on again to finish runner-up in a Grade 2 event over this c & d, five weeks ago. She is well treated on official ratings and will be sharper on her third run after the break. The daughter of Captain Al will enjoy the likely blistering pace and she still gets the first verdict.
Race 5: THE CAPTAIN'S TUNE(7) - TOP BET
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM - Trainer: Geoff WOODRUFF
THE CAPTAIN'S TUNE is a smart three-year old gelding who has lots of scope for improvement. He was slightly disappointing in a Cape feature last time but the travelling or the left hand turn may have got to the son of Captain Al. The Woodruff inmate will love this longer run-in and he makes his handicap debut. He returns from a short six week break so would have recovered from his escapade to the mother city.
Race 7: TRIP TO HEAVEN(3)
Jockey: S'manga KHUMALO - Trainer: Sean TARRY
TRIP TO HEAVEN is lightly raced but he has already shown that he could be a top class sprinter in the making. He has a smart turn of foot and he easily beat a competitive field over 1160m in a feature last time, despite conceding ground at the off. The Sean Tarry inmate faces a tricky task over the minimum trip this time but he is well in on official ratings and has huge room for improvement. He will relish the likely blistering early speed.
Race 9: BARBEL RUN(4)
Jockey: Gunter WROGEMANN - Trainer: Alec LAIRD
BARBEL RUN and GASOLINE represent the Zambezi River c & d formline on 1/11 and the pair could fight things out in this big field. They were separated by just a short head when the former tired late into 4th on that occasion and the four-year old gelding is now 1.5kgs to the good. He has kept his form since and saves his best performances for this track.
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM - Trainer: Roy MAGNER
LADY THISTLE fared poorly in her last two sprints but her previous effort suggested that the daughter of Daring Bid is crying out for today's extra ground. She showed lots of toe behind By Jove over six furlongs that day but dropped out of contention before staying on eye-catchingly at the finish. It is very encouraging that Strydom climbs back aboard the Magner inmate and there could be serious improve- ment from the filly over this seven furlongs. She is well drawn and has the experience of racing around the turn.
