Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: SHAP SHAP(5) - TOP BET
Jockey: Anthony DELPECH - Trainer: Dean KANNEMEYER

Cape Town based trainer Dean Kannemeyer saddles his first runner of this KZN Season of Champions and SHAP SHAP could get the yard off to a flyer. The two-year old bay colt drifted alarmingly in the betting market but produced an eye-catching debut over six furlongs at Kenilworth in early February. He was slow into stride but ran on well to finish 4th, beaten just over two lengths at the wire. His conditioner's horses are seldom wound-up on debut so the Noordhoek Flyer colt should have lots of improvement to come. The obvious concern is that he may concede ground at the start once more, but he could get away with it on this polytrack.

Race 4: SALESMAN(2)
Jockey: Anton MARCUS - Trainer: Charles LAIRD

SALESMAN has a good c & d record but he was clearly 2nd best behind an improving type, three weeks ago. However, he is often competitive in these low-key handicaps and runs well for Marcus. The son of Rebel King is once again drawn well and he should give another very good account of himself.

Jockey: Anton MARCUS - Trainer: Charles LAIRD

PIONEER SPIRIT is an above-average three-year old who may have just needed his comeback run over this c & d, two weeks ago. The manner in which he raced suggested that he could relish being equipped with blinkers and his conditioner has obliged tonight. The son of Go Deputy will strip fitter and he could take full advantage of being dropped five pounds in the ratings after that performance. Furthermore, he jumps from a handy draw and makes his handicap debut. He concedes 2.5kgs to the Cape challenger MASTER JAMES though, and will be severely tested as a result.

Race 8: FLEETFOX(1)
Jockey: Anton MARCUS - Trainer: Dennis DRIER

FLEETFOX was taken to Cape Town by the Drier yard and after a moderate debut, he improved significant- ly in the 'Mother City'. The form of his penultimate outing has worked out extremely well and the son of Silvano was caught on the line by another smart sort over a mile in his latest attempt. He would have strengthened during his ten week absence and his conditioner's horses usually do well on this surface. The engaging of Anton Marcus suggests that his trainer will have him fit and ready and the bay gelding will take a power of beating from his good draw. The only concern is how he handles the lights.

Race 7: LUCKY PACKET(10) (Each Way)
Jockey: Athandiwe MGUDLWA - Trainer: Doug CAMPBELL

This is an interesting low-key handicap and could provide an upset in the form of LUCKY PACKET from the Doug Campbell yard. This daughter of Spaceship has reached a competitive mark in the ratings and she has finished close-up in her last two efforts on this surface. She stayed on strongly behind two fair sorts over this c & d in her penultimate run and was running on late when just out of the money over seven furlongs, two weeks ago. The four-year old filly now has her third run after the layoff and will be a handful from gate 1.
