Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 3: DARK ABBOT(2)
Jockey: Anton MARCUS - Trainer: Garth PULLER

DARK ABBOT weakened steadily when perhaps still needing his last start over seven furlongs. He showed decent ability before that but has his issues. The son of Right Approach returned from a long break when he produced an eye-catching penultimate effort and he now has his third run after the rest. He reverts to sprinting over the minimum trip and should go very well in this line-up.

Race 4: ALPEONIE(7)
Jockey: Anton MARCUS - Trainer: G/K ANTHONY

The extremely well-related daughter of Captain Al, ALPEONIE caught the eye with a pleasing debut over six furlongs at Scottsville, earlier this year. She found longshot betting support and showed good speed before tiring late into 3rd, beaten just under four lengths at the line. The runner-up gave that form a boost when winning subsequently and this bay filly should make natural improvement. Her yard is enjoying a decent run of form and she will enjoy this drop in distance. She gets Anton Marcus in the irons and should take a power of beating.

Jockey: Brandon LERENA - Trainer: Mark DIXON

SHOWMETHEWAY got going late for 4th behind the speedy ROYALSECURITYPOWER over the minimum trip in his comeback run, three weeks ago. He finished well for 4th in yielding conditions that day and will be an entirely different proposition over this extra furlong. The classy six-year old gelding will strip fitter and he meets his conqueror on 2.5kgs better terms. He is best in on official ratings and runs well for Brandon Lerena.

Jockey: Keagan DE MELO - Trainer: Charles LAIRD

PIONEER SPIRIT took on some top class three-year olds whilst in Gauteng and prior to his dismal last two runs, he shaped nicely in that province. He is obviously a little below those types but has a bit of class about him and still has plenty to offer. The son of Go Deputy loves racing in KZN and rather interestingly, he has changed stables. He is the best rated runner this contest and has too much class for today's rivals. However, he does race on the polytrack for the first time and how he adapts to the surface is a concern.

Race 2: FLYING LOOT(4) (Each Way)
Jockey: Stuart RANDOLPH - Trainer: Paul LAFFERTY

There are some fast types on display in this small field and a likely suicidal pace could play into the hands of those that finish their races well. FLYING LOOT is an improving three-year old with a solid turn of foot and she could profit most from the speed. She did just that when she easily overha- uled CHERRY TRIPPER over this c & d in late December. The daughter of Flying Spur is 1.5kgs worse off at the weights with the latter but she has lots of scope for improvement. She races well fresh and merits healthy respect.
