We have an oddly structured midweek group of games. With no league action on Saturday or Sunday, eight teams are participating over four days, starting with a game on Tuesday evening and ending with an enticing clash on Friday night. It could work out to be a profitable bunch of games to put into a multiple, so let’s get to it.
Tuesday 21 April
Free State Stars 29/20
Ajax Cape Town 18/10
Ajax kept their excellent home record intact with yet another victory in the Mother City over the weekend. They hit the road on Tuesday to face a Free State Stars side who overcame Polokwane City last time out in an enthralling 3-2 win away from home. Hosting the Urban Warriors off the back of that performance will be comforting , especially given the wary spot they still find themselves in. They’ve shown the determination needed to escape relegation but this fixture will be another test for Stars. Ajax have historically had the upper hand in this fixture, but given the nature of the match they should be very wary facing a Stars side fighting for PSL survival. I’m going to go with the draw here, purely based on the attitude Stars could be in come kick off, to outweigh the skills advantage that Ajax possess. The value here is the draw at 21/10.
Wednesday 22 April
Mamelodi Sundowns 8/10
Platinum Stars 37/10
Both of the top two sides are in action on Wednesday night, starting with Sundowns’ clash against struggling Dikwena. They’ve squeezed themselves out of relegation and have probably done enough to survive another season in PSL, but Platinum Stars will need to do some serious off-season rebuilding. Points have been hard for them to come by and this clash should prove no different. Sundowns provided the upset of last week, with a drubbing at the hands of Bloem Celtic. One red card and five goals conceded pretty much sums up the disappointing performance and Pitso’s men will want to put that result behind them as quickly as possible. I’d imagine them coming out guns blazing, leaving Dikwena little chance in this one. At 8/10 the home win, it seems the value you’d like to get after a perceived odds-on favourite heads out after a 5-0 demolition. Get involved.
Kaizer Chiefs 7/20
Polokwane City 8/1
Chiefs looks just about home and dry in terms of the league title and the vultures waiting for them to fall seem to have stopping their circling. Another regulation 1-0 victory under the belt during last week has put them thirteen points ahead with four games remaining. If my arithmetic skills are decent, a win for AmaKhosi on Wednesday should secure them the league title despite Sundowns having a game in hand. This extra incentive will not suit Polokwane City, who would’ve posed a decent threat to the almost league champions. Chiefs have never lost this clash and after Polokwane’s disappointing 3-2 loss to Free State Stars last time out, you have to feel that this challenge could prove insurmountable. With no value on a Chiefs win at 7/20, you might find more value in-running. If you’re structuring a multiple however, perhaps look to Chiefs to keep a clean sheet here, depending on which holds more value.
Friday 24 April
University of Pretoria
Pirates were disappointing last week in a 2-0 defeat to Wits. Not being the most consistent of sides in the league this season showed up in a closely fought game where their lack of decisive finishing became the ultimate differentiator. Wits played their hand to perfection, illuminating the core faults in the Pirates setup. With little to play for from here on, we could either see a pressure-free Bucs side play entertaining footy or a lacklustre showing for a tired squad. AmaTuks have the worst form in the league at the moment, so naming them as prospects to win any game this season is tough ask, no matter who they play. I fancy Pirates to come up trumps here, not because they have the form or pedigree to succeed at the moment but because AmaTuks simply have nothing going for them. The home win may not provide the greatest value on offer based on the sides involved, so perhaps look to Under 2.5 goals for some better value.
