Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: PAULUS(2)
Jockey: Francois NAUDE - Trainer: Corne SPIES

The Corne' Spies yard holds a strong hand with their runners on the whole of today's card and could start the day off on a high note in this opening affair. PAULUS has the experience and the bay gelding has already travelled thousands of kilometres during his short career. He made an encouraging debut over 800m on this course earlier in the year and had two subsequent decent efforts in Gauteng. He has been dismal in his last two runs but had excuses on those occasions and was competing in a KZN feature last time out. He clearly has the class to beat this field but only the race will tell how he has taken the travelling.

Jockey: Muzi YENI - Trainer: Tienie PRINSLOO

LATINO'S JET is becoming costly to follow but he continues to hold his form and has now finished runner-up in his last four outings. He refused to go past the frontrunner when beaten a neck over a mile last time but perhaps frontrunning tactics could do the trick for Yeni & Prinsloo today. The son of Latino Magic should easily handle the rise in distance and he doesn't take on the strongest opposition.

Jockey: Francois NAUDE - Trainer: Corne SPIES

HAWKSWORTH made a welcome return to form when he was caught late after adopting frontrunning tactics in a competitive allowance contest over a mile on the Vaal sand, two weeks ago. He has been facing much stronger opposition for some time now and is well treated in today's handicap. The son of Lecture has done well on this track and he should go close from another good draw. The drop in trip is no issue for the bay gelding.

Race 9: RHUMBA BEAT(4)
Jockey: Muzi YENI - Trainer: Tienie PRINSLOO

The Tienie Prinsloo stable holds a decent hand in this low-key fillies and mares handicap. RHUMBA BEAT made a bright local debut when she was outrun late over this c & d four weeks ago and she will strip much fitter. She easily accounted for her stablemate GRACEFILLY that day and should build on that effort. She was handed a two pound penalty but has lots more improvement to come and merits healthy respect.

Race 4: MATTEO(1) (Each Way)
Jockey: Gunter WROGEMANN - Trainer: Dennis CASON

MATTEO is a gutsy type with solid recent form and he should have finished much closer over seven furlongs, four weeks ago. He drops in class on his third run after the layoff and is even better over the mile. The son of Caesour should go close in this field despite shouldering a big mass. That said, there are a few lively dangers, starting with the Clinton Binda pairing of CREATIVE STRIPE and JEWEL OF THE STAGE. The former was an impressive winner of his only local run over this c & d and though he has been poor in his last few outings, it must be noted that he has been taking on stronger on the Highveld. He will strip fitter after needing his comeback run and is well drawn here.
