Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 3: BAREGA(2) - TOP BET
Jockey: Athandiwe MGUDLWA - Trainer: Alyson WRIGHT

BAREGA has been costly to follow but she has shown enough promise in her eight starts to warrant healthy respect in this line-up. She was in need of her comeback run when 2nd best over the minimum trip but will strip fitter and is bred to love this extra distance. The daughter of Jet Master has her second start for her new yard and she is a lively contender from her midfield barrier. She could enjoy racing on this surface.

Jockey: Sean CORMACK - Trainer: Dennis DRIER

ROY'S WINTER PATCH needed his comeback run in this province and could only build on that effort. He appears a galloping sort who has definite scope for improvement and this extra furlong should suit him well. The Drier inmate could cause an upset despite his wide draw.

Race 5: MELANCHETE(13)
Jockey: Nicholas PATEL - Trainer: Lezeanne FORBES

MELANCHETE is effective on both surfaces and she produced a strong late run when just failing by a neck to collar the speedy COTSWOLD over this trip on the polytrack, two weeks ago. She was upped five pounds for that effort but is still 2kgs better off with her conqueror and she jumps from a good draw. The daughter of Black Minnaloushe will again benefit from a 4kgs apprentice claim.

Race 6: HUNTING OWL(7)
Jockey: Stuart RANDOLPH - Trainer: Duncan HOWELLS

This is an intriguing progress plate that pits many out of town rivals against the locals. HUNTING OWL is an improving type from the locally based yard of Duncan Howells. The three-year old Silvano gelding shed his maiden tag at the third attempt and was impressive when rising considerably in class next time out. He had an awkward start from his wide draw but still finished strongly when beaten a close up 3rd over 1300m on this course, that day. He takes another serious step-up in grade today but has lots of room for improvement and should relish the mile from his good draw. He is certainly much better than his current rating.

Race 8: WANTON CHILD(12) (Each Way)
Jockey: Luyolo MXOTHWA - Trainer: Paul GADSBY

This is a very poor maiden contest and plenty of caution is advised. WANTON CHILD showed good improve- ment from a wide draw in a sprint over six furlongs on this track, second time out. She made steady progress and was beaten just under three lengths at the line. The rise to the mile should suit the daughter of Miesque's Approval and she is well drawn at gate 3. She should continue to improve.
