Winning Form Best Bets
Race 1: BIKINI GIRL(1)
Race 5: SHAAMA(13)
Race 6: REDCARPET CAPTAIN(9)
Race 7: ALBORAN SEA(9)
Magic Tips Best Bets
Jockey: Anton MARCUS - Trainer: Johan Janse v/Vuuren
The juveniles strut their stuff early on this 'big day' and an exciting finish could be on the cards in this opening event. Gauteng trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren may have earmarked this contest a while ago for his charge BIKINI GIRL as she got a taste of this c & d against winners, ten days ago. She had a slow start on that occasion but recovered to race handy before tiring late into a creditable 4th, beaten just over three lengths at the line. She should continue to progress with racing and she drops to maiden company with Anton Marcus in the irons. Furthermore, the daughter of Magic Albert jumps from pole position and she could take some beating.
Race 2: RED ROVER(3)
Jockey: Alec FORBES - Trainer: Alistair GORDON
This is the first of some competitive handicaps on this card but RED ROVER could be the right one. The five-year old gelding has been thereabouts since his easy last win and he was only outrun late into 3rd over a mile in a strong line-up on this track, two weeks ago. That formline could certainly be worth following and this son of Victory Moon is equally effective over this shorter distance. He has enough early gate speed to overcome his wide draw.
GRADE 1 ALLAN ROBERTSON
Race 5: ENTISAAR(2)
Jockey: Johnny GEROUDIS - Trainer: Mike DE KOCK
The Mike de Kock and Glen Kotzen yard's each have a pair of fillies representing them and their charges could dominate the outcome of this Grade 1 contest. ENTISAAR is top quality and she quickly set the record straight with an easy last win in the Fillies Nursery over 1160m in Gauteng. The manner in which she races suggests that this stiff circuit could suit her perfectly and she is a major contender. However, it is worth noting that the stable jockey has opted for SHAAMA who was interestingly one second faster than the top selection over the same c & d last time, just over an hour later. Of course, this Australian import was staying on for 2nd against the boys in the Nursery. She merits huge respect with Delpech in the irons. ROYAL PLEASURE is unbeaten in three runs to date, all of which have been on this course. The Kotzen inmate is a very fast daughter of Visionaire but she may have been fortunate to account for her stablemate PRINCESS ROYAL in a feature last time and this extra 100m is a concern. However, Marcus retains the ride and she must be included. The latter has loads of class and but for traffic issues, should have gone very close last time. She can reverse the form today.
GRADE 1 TSOGO SUN
Race 6: JET AIR(4) - VALUE BET
Jockey: Grant V/NIEKERK - Trainer: Mike BASS
This is another fascinating Grade 1 contest that features two runaway Highveld debut winners who make the huge step-up in class. However, the Cape visitor JET AIR could spoil the party at long-odds. The Mike Bass inmate had little go his way on debut but showed his true class with an impressive maiden victory over seven furlongs, second time out. Admittedly, he takes on considerably stronger but his conditioner obviously rates him highly and the son of Visionaire would have strengthened during his nine week absence. This stiff six furlongs could suit him perfectly and he is definitely one to follow during the season. SEVENTH PLAIN has won 2 of his 3 career outings and has lots more to offer. He ran on well to defeat BEAT THE RETREAT in his comeback run over this c & d last time and will be fitter now. Marcus won this very same event for today's conditioner and owner last year & the son of Seventh Rock must be respected. MUWAARY and PROSPECT STRIKE pulverized their maiden rivals on debut over this trip at the Vaal recently and it will be interesting to see if they make the step-up in grade. They are highly regarded by their respective yard's.
GRADE 1 CITY OF PMB
Race 7: JET BELLE(2)
Jockey: Greg CHEYNE - Trainer: Glen KOTZEN
JET BELLE continues to show her brilliance and versatility and is deserving of a first Grade 1 win. She went close at that level in back-to-back events over further at the end of the Cape summer and began this winter season campaign with an excellent victory. The daughter of Jet Master surprisingly shifted her ground badly in the latter stages but she cruised to victory at Grade 3 level over this c & d, four weeks ago. She will strip fitter and has already lowered the colours of the brilliant three-year old filly ALBORAN SEA, previously. The latter though, has turned her fortunes around since & recorded back-to-back Grade 1 wins in her last two starts. She showed lots of determination to hold off CARRY ON ALICE and win the Computaform Sprint, four weeks ago. Of course, the Mike de Kock inmate captured a Grade 1 over this c & d in a flawless performance as a juvenile, last term. She will be much fitter today and is a huge contender. Her old adversary CARRY ON ALICE got closer to the daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar last time and merits obvious respect. FLY BY NIGHT was brilliant during her last KZN campaign & is capable of upsetting, even though she needs to make big improvement on her last run.
GRADE 1 TSOGO SUN SPRINT
Race 8: CAPTAIN OF ALL(1)
Jockey: Sean CORMACK - Trainer: Dennis DRIER
CAPTAIN OF ALL is a top class colt who ran in snatches in a below-par last Grade 1 run but that effort clearly suggested that he prefers this six furlongs, nowadays. The Drier inmate is a former Grade 1 winner over this c & d and interestingly is unbeaten over this trip. He concedes chunks of weight in this often tricky Grade 1 handicap but his class should prevail. However, the speedy son of Captain Al will be in for a stiff test over the final furlong.
WILLOW MAGIC was comfortably beaten by the top rating on the Highveld last time but he is 6kgs better off at the weights for that 2.65 lengths deficit. Of course, the Tarry inmate was close-up in 2nd behind the top selection over this c & d in a Grade 1 event as a juvenile, a few years ago. The son of Dubawi has been disappointing in his last two runs but Strydom could make the difference on the chestnut who did show some improvement last time.
MOOFEED has excellent form against lesser opposition but he is improving swiftly. He was very slow into stride but produced a strong finish when just beaten by GULF STORM (0.5kg worse off) over 1100m on this track, four weeks ago. The extra 100m will make a difference and he could be ready to step-up.
Race 9: BALTIC AMBER(1)
Jockey: Stuart RANDOLPH - Trainer: Duncan HOWELLS
BALTIC AMBER has relished racing beyond sprints and he produced two excellent finishes to record back- to-back victories over a mile at Greyville, recently. His handicap debut win was most impressive though as he jumped from a wide draw but finished the event strongly and held off the five-year old BERMUDA by three parts of a length. The son of Alado will now be cherry-ripe on his third run back from a layoff and he clearly seems to have escaped with just a four pound penalty. The three-year old bay gelding should continue to progress and this extra 150m will suit him perfectly. He can defy the odds from an even wider draw today.
