Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 2: SAPSAN(3) - TOP BET
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM - Trainer: DAVID Nieuwenhuizen

SAPSAN has done well since shedding her maiden tag at the third attempt. She had a decent penultimate run over this c & d when runner-up and then followed the effort with a fair 4th in a feature behind a subsequent Grade 1 winner. She drops in class today and should go very close with Strydom in the irons.

Race 6: CAGIVA(4)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM - Trainer: Sean TARRY

Only a small field of eight runners gather for this renewal of the final 'July pointer', the Grade 3 Jubilee Handicap. All eyes will certainly be on the Sean Tarry trained three-year old gelding, LEGAL EAGLE who is priced-up as the third favourite for the big event at Greyville in the first week of July. The Greys Inn gelding has been brilliant since returning from his lengthy absence and he only shed his maiden tag in March. He was super-impressive when beating a classy field in the Derby last time but will be severely tested under a big mass against older rivals today. The bay gelding won't be fully tuned-up, with the July in mind but a likely sedate pace will suit him and he merits healthy respect. His stable companions could give him plenty to think about though and CAGIVA also won't mind a false gallop. This five-year old son of Silvano is plagued with issues but has shown plenty of class in his staggered career. He stayed on for a good 3rd behind a subsequent Grade 1 winner over ten furlongs in a feature last time and is well handicapped in this contest. This slightly shorter trip should suit him better and he is unbeaten over this c & d.

Race 7: BARBEL RUN(12)
Jockey: Juan-Paul v.d.MERWE - Trainer: Alec LAIRD

The lightweight BARBEL RUN has a solid c & d record and he is overdue his next career win. He quickly got back to form with a gutsy last c & d effort at pinnacle level and now has his third run after the layoff. The son of Joshua Dancer finished only three parts of a length in front of DENNIS THE MENACE that day but is now 2.5kgs better off with that rival and should confirm the form. The Alec Laird inmate has strong claims of going one better.

Race 8: ATSO TIME(8)
Jockey: Fanie CHAMBERS - Trainer: Corne SPIES

ATSO TIME weakened over a mile last time but produced an impressive win over this c & d in his penultimate outing. The Spies inmate will clearly prefer reverting to sprints and he can stake a serious claim in this field.

Race 4: PIED PIPERESS(2) (Each Way)
Jockey: Gunter WROGEMANN - Trainer: Grant MAROUN

PIED PIPERESS clearly didn't enjoy nine furlongs when she produced a shocking last performance but she is much better than that. This shorter trip will suit the daughter of Argonaut who produced her career best effort with Wrogemann in the saddle. Her wide draw isn't the worst thing as she usually runs on late and this longer run-in is to her liking.
