Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 3: BEAT THE RETREAT(5)
Jockey: Forbes A - Trainer: Gordon A D

The three-year olds could feature prominently in this competitive contest and the Alistair Gordon inmate BEAT THE RETREAT gets the vote. The Argonaut colt was an impressive debut winner on this track and he has performed creditably in a trio of major juvenile features since. He finished strongly for a close 5th over seven furlongs on July day in a Grade 1 and that form has been franked. The bay colt has huge scope for improvement and he is well-weighted on his seasonal debut today. He will be tested by the older guard but is still the horse to beat.

Race 4: SOLDIER'S CODE(9)
Jockey: Delpech A - Trainer: Kannemeyer D

This is a wide open maiden contest with half the field holding realistic claims for victory. SOLDIER'S CODE has gone off as favourite twice in as many starts but unfortunately let the side. Those runs were on the polytrack and though he improved second time out, he failed to quicken and perhaps the switch to the grass could help the Kannemeyer inmate realize his true potential. The expensive Western Winter colt should relish this rise in distance and he should make further progress. It is obviously encoura- ging that Delpech once again retains the ride on the colt.

Race 6: AFRIKABURN(2)
Jockey: Delpech A - Trainer: Kannemeyer D

AFRIKABURN had major issues that restricted him during his three-year old career but his conditioner has given him the necessary time-off and the classy gelding could benefit as a result. He showed his true ability as a juvenile and improved in his last two comeback runs. The Trippi gelding wasn't disgraced at Grade 1 level on Gold Cup day and he now has his peak run. He is fairly well in on official ratings and could get back to winning ways.

Race 8: ROY'S GOLD(1) - TOP BET
Jockey: Marcus A - Trainer: Govender Y

ROY'S GOLD has found her form since returning from an eleven week break and this is her ideal chance for her to get that deserved first career win for herself and her conditioner who is now training under his own right. The daughter of Horse Chestnut adopted different tactics from her wide berth over this c & d last time but she ran on well to finish 3rd. She now has her peak outing and Marcus retains the ride on the bay filly. She is handily drawn and should take a power of beating. The four-year old filly is the solitary entrant from her yard on today's card.

VALUE BET FOR TODAY:

Race 5: PIANO MAN(1)
Jockey: Lerena B - Trainer: Goodman J M

There are plenty of speedy sorts who could easily harm each other's chances in this competitive handicap and the top weight PIANO MAN has claims of picking them off in the closing stages. Admittedly he will be tested with his big mass but he is in good touch and has been taking on much stronger. The Mogok gelding loves racing on this track.
