PSL: Week 10 Preview (Tuesday)

After a weekend of shock results in the PSL, the log has been shaken up a bit. Polokwane City have dropped into the relegation zone while Orlando Pirates have moved up to twelfth spot on the table. With the fixtures coming thick and fast, managers around the country have to start rotating their squads in a bid to keep them fresh. These rotational policies may well lead to a few more shocks this week.

Let’s see if I can take advantage of that and find some winners.

Tuesday 3 October

Kaizer Chiefs  11/20
Draw  26/10
Golden Arrows  57/10

The Glamour Boys will be looking to appease their fans after a disappointing 1-3 loss to their arch rivals last Saturday. The derby defeat has seen Chiefs drop to ninth on the log. However, they are only five points off first-placed Wits, and if they can string a run of wins together they could end the year at the summit of the PSL. If they want to achieve this, they will need to start that run soon but with Golden Arrows coming to town, this will be no easy task. Arrows have enjoyed a relatively solid start to the campaign. The KZN side have won four of their eight PSL fixtures thus far and have only tasted defeat twice. They have been decent on the road, winning two games and drawing one, on the road. Their sole away defeat came at the hands of the high-flying Mpumalanga Black Aces in week five. My money is on Chiefs recovering from their Soweto derby hangover and putting on a performance that sees them claim all three points. Back the home side at 11/20.

Maritzburg United  14/10
Draw  9/4
Polokwane City  18/10
It has been a tough start to the campaign for Maritzburg United. The Team of Choice have lost seven out of their eight fixtures thus far. They sit at the foot of the table with only a single point to their names. To make matters worse, the hosts come into this game off the back of a three-nil defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns. The defeat is likely to leave United extremely low on morale and confidence. They will need to put these feelings aside however as they host a Polokwane City side who are also desperate for log points. Rise and Shine may have one more win and two more draws to their names than Tuesday night’s opponents, but they may well end up in a relegation dogfight alongside Maritzburg. They have only managed to find the back of the net on six occasions this season. With both teams struggling for goals, this one may well end in a 0-0 draw. However, I’m not bold enough to back a goalless draw so instead I’ll tip a draw at 9/4.

Black Aces  15/20
Draw  23/10
Jomo Cosmos  77/20
Black Aces come into this game off the back of a loss to Chippa United. The 2-1 defeat was only the second loss of the campaign for the Mpumalanga-based side. While Aces had a poor weekend, Cosmos managed to get their first win of the campaign. The 1-0 victory over Polokwane city has moved Ezenkosi up to thirteenth place on the log. They will be desperate to continue this upward trend when they run onto the Mbombela Stadium pitch. With Aces in fine goal scoring form (13 goals in 9 matches) and Cosmos struggling to keep clean sheets, I can see this game ending with the total scoreline over 2.5 goals. Which makes for a healthy return at 5/4.
