Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: BLACK RAKE(3)
Jockey: Raymond DANIELSON – Trainer: Tara LAING

BLACK RAKE has posted some promising local form since arriving in the province and he stayed on well for 2nd when trying ten furlongs on the grass, two weeks ago. His prior form proves that he is equally capable on today’s surface and the Tara Laing inmate is the one to beat from the best draw.

Race 3: FOREST LAWN(7)
Jockey: Francois HERHOLDT – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

As predicted, FOREST LAWN has blossomed in the province and the lightly raced bay mare built on her promising local debut when pipped on the post, two weeks ago. She was racing a mere 18 days later so the effects of the lengthy absence may have told on her but the daughter of Rebel King now has her peak effort and she could take a power of beating. She finished a good 2nd on her polytrack debut in her penultimate effort and is once again drawn well today.

TOP BET
Race 4: ROMAN CALAMITY(1)
Jockey: Craig ZACKEY – Trainer: Corne SPIES

The merit ratings tell the full story in this novice plate and the likely short-priced favourite ROMAN CALAMITY has this contest at his mercy. The Caesour gelding seems firmly over the issue that kept him out of action for 40 weeks and he was always going to enjoy this forgiving surface. He did just that with two eye-catching comeback runs within a fortnight and then fared extremely well at a high level on the grass next time out. Furthermore, he should have gone even closer but for traffic issues last time out. The four-year-old gelding is capable from or near the front of the field and a likely sedate gallop won’t harm his chances. He should justify favouritism.

Race 8: IN REM(14)

Jockey: Muzi YENI – Trainer: Dorrie SHAM

This is an interesting low-key handicap that could be fought out between IN REM and ROCK OF VICTORY, both of whom defied their merit ratings when featuring prominently at graduation level over 1100m on this track last Monday. The pair were separated by just a neck as the former finished 3rd, beaten just over three lengths despite his paltry merit rating of 47. That was his comeback outing from a ten-week absence but he will prefer racing on these handicap terms, even though he is still under sufferance. The son of Jay Peg should be fitter and he is now 3.5kgs better off with the latter.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 2: EMBLEM HONOUR(10)
Jockey: Raymond DANIELSON – Trainer: Tara LAING

There are many natural frontrunners in this competitive handicap and they could easily harm each other’s chances. The six-year-old entire’ EMBLEM HONOUR isn’t consistent but he will love the likely suicidal gallop and should be picking off his rivals in the home straight. The imported bay wasn’t disgraced, admittedly in weaker company, last time but put in a bold penultimate effort behind ALL THE BIDS (1.5kgs worse off) and is weighted to reverse the form with the gutsy latter.
