Race 1: REFUGE(14)
Jockey: S’manga KHUMALO – Trainer: Scott KENNY

REFUGE was completely unfancied when he produced a high-quality debut over this c & d, three weeks ago. He challenged strongly when going down exactly one length into 2nd behind a fellow newcomer on that occasion and the 3rd placed finisher Ronin Warrior boosted the form with a subsequent victory. This son of Toreador would have come on appreciably from that experience and he should be a major contender in this opening event.

Race 2: FISH RIVER CANYON(10)
Jockey: Andrew FORTUNE – Trainer: Gary ALEXANDER

The Beckoning c & d formline could stand up well in this competitive maiden event and FISH RIVER CANYON looks set to make smart improvement after her fair debut. She was making steady late headway in the event referred to above and judging by the betting market that day, the daughter of Mullins Bay wasn’t fully tuned-up by her conditioner. She will be a serious proposition here.

Top Bet
Race 6: ALDIARA(5)
Jockey: Mpumelelo MJOKA – Trainer: Stanley FERREIRA
Just eight fillies and mares contest this sprint handicap but there are many form runners so a close finish is expected. ALDIARA clearly benefitted from blinkers as she ran her rivals ragged when beating DRIFTING DUSK (1kg worse off) by almost two lengths over six furlongs at the Vaal in late June. That win earned her a four-pound penalty but the well-related daughter of Captain Al has the headgear on again and she could have lots more to come. Her conditioner has cleverly negated the penalty by engaging a 4kgs claiming apprentice and without many speedy sorts present, she could enjoy things up front.

Race 8: RAFA(2)

Jockey: Ryan MUNGER – Trainer: Leon ERASMUS

RAFA is in very good form and he ran on strongly late for a close 2nd at the Vaal, two weeks ago. He had the speedy JUST AFRICA (1kg better off) comfortably behind him that day and the five-year-old son of Parade Leader is threatening his next career victory. The latter is often thereabouts and he posted two useful c & d efforts. He continues to steadily drop in the merit ratings and must still be strongly considered.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 3: EVERSILVER(2)
Jockey: Gunter WROGEMANN – Trainer: Lucky HOUDALAKIS

This is a competitive maiden contest over the mile and EVERSILVER could be the right one, if her pilot can get the daughter of Ideal World to the head of affairs. The four-year-old filly possibly found nine furlongs too far for her last time but she did produce a career best effort over this c & d with frontrunning tactics in her penultimate start. She represents an in-form yard today.
