South Africa PSL: Week 3 Preview

PSL-Week-2-Preview

Our writer previews week three of the 2016/17 South African PSL season.

After two rounds of action-packed PSL fixtures, Soweto giants Orlando Pirates, are top of the table. It might be early, but the Buccaneers are clearly in it to win it. They are the only team to win both their matches and they will be eager to maintain that 100% winning record when they play host to Cape Town City on Tuesday evening.

Cross-town rivals Kaizer Chiefs have made a dismal start to the campaign, and are without a win after three matches in all competitions. As a result, the Amakhosi faithful are calling for Steve Komphela’s head. Defending Champions Mamelodi Sundowns have made a mediocre start to the campaign but with their firepower and quality in their ranks, the Brazilians are bound to kick into gear. Enough chit chat, let’s find out what gameweek 3 holds in store.

Tuesday 20 September

Ajax Cape Town 8/10 | Draw 23/10 | Polokwane City 33/10
The Urban Warriors have had a tough start to the campaign, earning a hard-fought point away to newcomers Baroka, before going down 2-1 on home soil against table-toppers Orlando Pirates. They have been unfortunate but if they maintain their excellent work ethic and fighting spirit, they should soon find themselves on the winning team.

Polokwane City impressed last time out, playing to a dour goalless draw at home against title-chasers Bidvest Wits. They lack quality going forward and if they are not careful, Ajax can make them pay the price.

Polokwane are poor away from home. The Urban Warriors have won six of the last eight meetings against them and are tipped to build on that.

Baroka FC 3/1 | Draw 22/10 | Bidvest Wits 9/10
News boys Baroka will take on Bidvest Wits, aiming to claim their first ever victory in the PSL. They drew their first home game against Ajax Cape Town and now face a tougher test in the form of the Clever boys.

Bidvest Wits have made a bright start to the new campaign, despite settling for a goalless draw away to Polokwane last time out. Nonetheless, the Clever Boys are playing attractive, attacking, fluid football and should come out guns blazing.

Baroka are desperate to get their first win under their belt, whilst Wits need to make sure they stay in touching distance of the summit of the table. I feel the Clever Boys will be too good for the newcomers – so get on the away win.

Orlando Pirates 5/10 | Draw 5/2 | Cape Town City 6/1
Pirates will welcome Cape Town City to the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday evening, determined to maintain their excellent winning form. They are the only team to win both their opening match-ups and will be eager to make it three in a row.

Cape Town City started the season with an impressive 1-0 home win against Kaizer Chiefs, but then fell to a 2-0 defeat at Golden Arrows last time out. It should be a cagey contest, but the Bucs are tipped to come out on top.

Wednesday 21 September

Free State Stars 14/10 | Draw 21/10 | Golden Arrows 19/10
Free State Stars and Golden Arrows will lock horns on Wednesday evening. Ea Lla Koto are winless after two matches, while their opponents have lost one and won the other.

In the last six meetings between the sides, Free State Stars have won three, while Arrows have won the other three encounters. Following Abafana Bes’thende’s 2-0 home win against Cape Town City, they might just have enough momentum and confidence to bag maximum points here.

Highlands Park 22/10 | Draw 21/10 | Kaizer Chiefs 12/10
Newly-promoted Highlands Park will take on a vulnerable Kaizer Chiefs team. The Glamour Boys are yet to hit the ground running this season and are looking ripe for the taking. The Lions of the North will be looking to make home advantage count, just as they did last time out, edging Baroka 2-1.

Nonetheless, with the quality that Chiefs possess, they are bound to come good. They may not be playing the best football at the moment, but AmaKhosi are tipped to scrape a first league win of the new campaign.

Maritzburg Utd 14/10 | Draw 21/10 | SuperSport Utd 18/10
Maritzburg have made a decent start to the campaign, claiming maximum points at Bloefontein Celtic on the opening day of the season, before holding defending champions Sundowns to a goalless draw at home.

SuperSport are winless after two matches, suffering a 3-1 defeat at Sundowns, prior to playing to a scoreless stalemate on home soil.  It should be a tight affair, but The Team of Choice is tipped to utilize home advantage.

TREBLE @ 4/1
Ajax Win 8/10
Wits Win 9/10
Pirates Win 5/10
