Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: ROMI’S BOY(9)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Alec LAIRD

ROMI’S BOY is the narrow first pick of the raced contingent and this Querari colt found betting support when he produced a classy debut over six furlongs at the Vaal, five weeks ago. He showed good speed before staying on for 2nd behind an experienced and highly regarded sort. The Alec Laird inmate finished well clear of the next placed runner PILOU and he now gets equipped with alumites for the first time. He should make natural improvement and merits healthy respect. The latter was also making his debut but was unfancied, suggesting that he wasn’t fully wound-up. He is well-bred and should build on that showing.

TOP BET
Race 5: AFRICA RISING(1)
Jockey: S’manga KHUMALO – Trainer: Sean TARRY

The powerful Sean Tarry stable holds a strong hand in this feature and the top class AFRICA RISING should fly the stable’s flag high. The chestnut colt had a late introduction to racing last season but he proved his class with an excellent effort in a Grade 1, shortly after his debut victory. He has acclimatized well on the Highveld and was impressive when winning his final prep for this event. The son of Visionaire has an awkward draw to negotiate on his track debut but he is above this field and could still take all the beating.

Race 8: HEAVENLY BLUE(4)
Jockey: Weichong MARWING – Trainer: Mike DE KOCK

The unbeaten HEAVENLY BLUE recorded two high class winning performances last season, the second of which was over this c & d. He beat some ordinary sorts but the manner of his victories were impressive and his conditioner’s decision to skip the KZN winter season could pay handsome dividends. The grey colt would have strengthened during his 17 week absence and he looks a top prospect in the making. He faces his acid test now but should be up to it and is worth following with confidence.

Race 9: RIVARINE(12)

Jockey: Lyle HEWITSON – Trainer: Michael AZZIE

At the time of writing, the night racemeeting showed that the outside draws are superior down the straight but judging from past experiences, particularly during the day, the inside barrier positions could dominate proceedings in sprint events today. There are some real speedsters drawn along the inside and the top class three-year-old colt RIVARINE should benefit from the likely suicidal pace. The son of Var was pipped in a feature when conceding chunks of weight last time but has a low mass this time around. He possesses a swift turn of foot and should be finishing well.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 2: TILBURY FORT(12)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Sean TARRY

TILBURY FORT has shown fair ability in his two runs to date but he proved to be a tough ride when trying this distance just over one month ago. He eventually got into top gear and ran on late for 3rd on the classic track at the Vaal that day. The Sean Tarry inmate has exactly three lengths to find on the runner-up AL HAMD but that experience could prove vital and he can get much closer to that rival here.
