Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: VEGAS BABY(6)
Jockey: Weichong MARWI NG – Trainer: Weiho MARWING

VEGAS BABY
was unfancied when she made late headway to finish 2nd best behind a runaway winner on debut over 800m at Turffontein recently and she should make natural improvement. The extra furlong should suit the daughter of Western Winter very well and she could make her presence felt. She is her yard’s only entrant on the card.

TOP BET

Race 4: SUN SENTINEL(14)
Jockey: Juan-Paul VAN DER MERVE – Trainer: Alec LAIRD

SUN SENTINEL
is his stable’s only representative on this programme and the half-sister to Grade 1 winner Juxtapose made an eye-catching debut at Turffontein in soft conditions recently. She ran on steadily for 3rd over the 1160m that day and incidentally, finished just three parts of a length behind Twinkle Town (runs in race 2) on that occasion. It could pay to follow the latter’s progress. This daughter of Captain Al should make natural improvement and the extra furlong will suit her well.

Race 7: HAMAAN(1)
Jockey: S’manga KHUMALO – Trainer: Sean TARRY

HAMAAN
was probably rushed into participating at the highest level of his generation a mere six days after shedding his maiden tag. Naturally, he flopped badly in the sticky conditions that day but he showed his ability when dispatching subsequent winner and equally highly rated sort Devadip over nine furlongs in his penultimate start. The well-bred Silvano colt has heaps of improvement to come and though he concedes chunks of weight to older rivals on his handicap debut today, he may prove up to the task and is worth following.

Race 8: DUKE NUKEM(4)

Jockey: Andrew FORTUNE – Trainer: Gary ALEXANDER

DUKE NUKEM
felt the effects of having to overcome a wide draw when he weakened in a below-par last run but he had smart form prior to that and must clearly be afforded another chance. The Bankable gelding deserved the short absence and he isn’t too badly out at the weights in this competitive graduation contest.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 9: APPROVAL MODE(4)

Jockey: Sherman BROWN – Trainer: Leon ERASMUS

The three-year-old APPROVAL MODE is above-average and he produced two much improved recent efforts against high-class opposition. He was comfortably beaten into 3rd by the top class dual subsequent winner Green Pepper in a feature last time but races in a low-key handicap today and should be highly competitive. The bay colt deserved the short absence and his jockey has come to form recently. That said, there are some hard-knocking handicappers who should give plenty of cheek despite many of them jumping from unfavourable draws.
