Ligue 1: Week 26 Preview

Ligue-1-week-26-preview

Our French football scribe returns to preview week 26 of the 2016/17 Ligue 1 season.

Week 26 may not throw up a glamour tie but there’s still some great football to sink your teeth into. The big guns will all come up against lowly opposition with Monaco travelling to Bastia, Nice making the trip to Lorient and PSG hosting Toulouse.

Will the powerhouses slip up or will the status quo be maintained this week?

Friday 17 February

Bastia 9/2 | Draw 3/1 | Monaco 11/20 (21:45)
We get gameweek 26 underway with a tie between 19th-placed Bastia and league leaders Monaco. The hosts come into this one off the back o a 4-1 loss to Toulouse while the visitors make the trip to the Stade Armand Cesari having hammered Metz 5-0.

Monaco are rather short at 11/20 but it’s the only result I can safely see happening here. Get on the away win!

Saturday 18 February

Marseille 6/10 | Draw 28/10 | Rennes 17/4 (18:00)
On to Saturday now and the first game of the day sees Marseille take on Rennes. The hosts have been hit and miss in recent weeks going down to Metz, then beating Guingamp, and then losing 3-2 to Nantes. Rennes, on the other hand, have been a model of consistency drawing their last five fixtures.

I suspect we’re in for a low scoring affair out at the Sate Velodrome this Saturday. As such, my advice for this one is to get on the Totals – Under 2.5 Goals market at 17/20.

Metz 18/10 | Draw 2/1 | Nantes 33/20 (21:00)
Metz will be looking to bounce back from their heavy defeat to PSG when they take on Nantes this Saturday evening. The hosts have been able to bounce back from heavy defeats this season and Saturday should be no different as they take on a Nantes side who have struggled on the road.

Nantes may come into this one off the back of a 3-2 victory over Marseille but my money is on Metz. Get on the home win at 18/10.

Lorient 18/10 | Draw 22/10 | Nice 15/10 (21:00)
Nice have a huge price affixed to them here mainly as a result of last week’s 2-2 away draw with Rennes. That aforementioned draw saw them drop to third place in the league and they will be desperate to make up ground on PSG and Monaco. Lorient also had a weekend to forget, going down 4-0 to St. Etienne.

I can’t see Nice slipping up again this week especially considering they are taking on veritable cannon-fodder in the shape of cellar-dwellers, Lorient. Get on the away win at 15/10.

Caen 15/10 | Draw 2/1 | Lille 39/20 (21:00)
Caen take on Lille in Saturday’s penultimate fixture. The hosts come into this one off the back of two heavy defeats and have shipped six goals in their last 180 minutes of football. Lille have also been in wretched form losing their last three games.

This is a rather tough one to call and I think it would be wise to avoid the outright winner market here. Instead, I’m going to back the Both Teams to Score Market at 9/10.

Angers 21/20 | Draw 21/20 | Nancy 29/20 (21:00)
Saturday draws to a close with Angers taking on Nancy. Les Scoistes have been in decent touch of the past fortnight picking up four points from their last two outings, while Nancy have lost their last two games, shipping seven goals in the process.

My money is on Angers compounding Nancy’s misery this Saturday evening. Get on the home win at 21/20.

Sunday 19 February

Bordeaux 19/20 | Draw 23/10 | Guingamp 3/1 (16:00)
We kick Sunday’s action off with a tie between seventh-placed Bordeaux and eighth-placed Guingamp. The hosts come into this one off the back of a 2-1 away victory over Lille while the visitors come to town having seen off Lyon by an identical score line.

I really like the price on offer for Guingamp. They’re a decent outfit who are more than capable of upsetting the odds here. I wouldn’t have a huge strike on it, but a smallish stake on Guingamp could reap a decent payout.

Lyon 7/20 | Draw 38/10 | Dijon 13/2 (18:00)
Lyon continue to struggle for consistency having followed up their 4-0 victory over Nancy with a 2-1 away defeat to Guingamp. The visitors, on the other hand, come into this one off the back of a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over Caen.

Lyon are extremely short at 7/20 and their form doesn’t really justify a huge strike. Instead, I recommend backing the Totals – Over 2.5 Goals market at 5/10.

Montpellier 27/20 | Draw 21/10 | St. Etienne 21/10 (18:00)
Montpellier will be looking to build on their 3-0 victory over Nancy when they take on St. Etienne in the penultimate gameweek 26 fixture. The visitors have been in decent touch winning three of their last four fixtures and should provide a stern test for La Paillade.

While I can see St. Etienne troubling the hosts, I’m not bold enough to tip them on the straight win. Instead, I recommend backing the Both Teams to Score – Yes market at 17/20.

PSG 2/9 | Draw 5/1 | Toulouse 11/1 (22:00)
Toulouse will be looking to cause a massive shock when they make the trip to the Parc des Princes. They may have a chance of achieving this as PSG face a daunting midweek Champions league tie against Barcelona.

PSG may be in decent touch domestically, but their Champions League exploits are likely to take a toll. It’s a bit of a risk but I will be having a strike on the Double Chance – Draw + Toulouse at 28/10.

Treble @ 27/1
Nice Win 15/10
Metz Win 18/10
Guingamp Win 3/1
