MODC: Warriors vs BuildNat Cape Cobras

Batsman hits ball

The Warriors and BuildNat Cape Cobras will both be searching for their first wins of the season when they meet at Buffalo Park this week .

Both the Warriors and the BuildNat Cape Cobras will be looking to get their campaigns off the ground when they meet at Buffalo Park on Tuesday afternoon in this week's first Momentum One Day Cup fixture.

Will the Warriors make home-ground advantage count or can the Cobras put the crushing defeat suffered at the hands of the Knights behind them? Let’s take a look:

Warriors vs Cape Cobras | Wednesday 22 February | Buffalo Park, East London | 14:00

To Win Match
Warriors 5/4 | Tie 35/1 | Cape Cobras 67/100

Warriors
While Jon-Jon Smuts might not have brought his T20 form over to the longer format of the game, Colin Ackermann and Colin Ingram seem to have picked up where they left off after the CSA T20 Slam. The former played a solid a run-a-ball 69 while Ackermann blasted his way to a 30-ball 46 against the Lions at the weekend.

They didn’t really receive enough support from the rest of the side though as they fell 44-runs short of the Lions’ mammoth 329. Still, there was enough to suggest that they could mount a pretty serious challenge in this competition.

Malibongwe Maketa will know that his side come into their next match against the Cobras as favourites, even if the betting suggests otherwise. The men from Cape Town were terrible in their first match of the season and may well find the Warriors too hot to handle in East London.

Looking ahead, I’d like to see more from Andrew Birch. Many people were keen to see whether or not he could retain the form that saw him become one of the most dangerous - and economical - bowlers of last season's Momentum One Day Cup. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite come off in the game against the Lions as Stephen Cook and Reeza Hendricks hit him out of the attack early on.

All in all, the Warriors look in good shape heading into this game. They look far more settled and have a wealth of players in their ranks that can turn a game on its head. They look an absolute must at 5/4; you’re not likely to find value like this many more times this season.

The biggest disappointment for the Cobras was how bad their powerful top order was on a decent batting wicket in Bloemfontein. I was surprised to see that neither Richard Levi nor Justin Ontong were able to get going with the ball coming on to the bat so nicely.

Levi is likely to struggle at Buffalo Park, a ground where the ball generally grips and turns. The burly right-hander is known as something of a flat-track bully and will battle to get hold of the Warriors' attack. Big performances will be needed from Omphile Ramela, Stiaan van Zyl, Ontong and Dane Vilas if the Cape side are to get enough runs to make a contest of this game.

The Cobras’ biggest weapon will be Dane Piedt. His attacking bowling and suitcase full of variations might just do the trick in East London. He will bring himself into the attack earlier than anticipated if the likes of Smuts, Cloete, Ackermann and Ingram take a liking to George Linde and Rory Kleinveldt, although at that point the game may already be gone/

The key to winning this match for the Cobras will be keeping the explosive Warriors top-order quiet. If they can run through the top four, they stand every chance of winning this match. However, if they let the top order players of the Warriors settle, they’ll be chasing leather and will probably find themselves bottom of the table without a win in two matches.

Verdict: Warriors 5/4
The Warriors showed far more fight in their opening-round defeat against the Lions this past weekend. Cloete, Ackermann and Ingram all looked good with bat in hand while Smuts and Harmer will look to strangle the Cobras on a wicket that’s likely to take a bit of turn.
