Aviva Premiership: Newcastle v Saracens Preview

We preview Saturday's Aviva Premiership game between the Newcastle Falcons and Saracens.

Newcastle should be confident enough to defeat a struggling Saracens side that is beginning to lose ground on the league’s top two, this Sunday at Kingston Park.

Newcastle v Saracens | Sunday 5 March | Kingston Park | 16:00

To Win (80 mins)
Newcastle 12/10 | Draw 18/1 | Saracens 7/10

The Newcastle Falcons have had a fairly solid season for their rather modest standards. Sitting in eighth place with 36 points, and just 3 points off of the sixth-placed Northampton (a side they beat 46-31 just over two weeks ago), they have every reason to feel optimistic about finishing in the league’s top half at season’s end. For a city whose number one sport is played with a round ball, Director of Rugby Dean Richard’s side have certainly made the region of Tyne and Wear proud with their oval ball skills. His squad has ‘no-name brands’ aplenty, which means they've thrived under the continuity they have maintained, whilst opposition teams (such as Saracens) have had their primary talent plucked up by national Six Nations coaches.

Captain Will Welch has led his team with distinction this season, though their latest slip-up at Exeter has certainly put things into perspective for them. Richards lamented his side’s missed opportunities last week, something they will certainly have to rectify quickly if they are to take down the mighty Saracens. Despite going down to Sarries by 21-6 in December, Newcastle will realise that their opponents are ripe for the plucking this time round, and they will certainly go for the jugular on Sunday.

At the beginning of the season, it looked as though Sarries were going to run away with a second successive title – well, how times have changed. They now find themselves in third position, one point behind Exeter and a whopping seven behind the log -leading Wasps. Six Nations call-ups haven’t aided the Sarries cause, and they have lost two of their last three domestic outings since the national tournament begun.

The arrival of Mako Vunipola for this weekend will serve as a massive coup for the stumbling giants. The England front-rower has been released from the national side for Sunday to regain full match fitness, and will rejoin Eddie Jones’ men next week. Vunipola’s presence should lift his team this weekend, but whether he can lift it enough to take down a confident Falcons outfit is another story. Nevertheless, be sure that Mark McCall’s men will have done a lot of soul-searching in recent weeks, and that they will show up at Kingston Park for this encounter.

Verdict: Newcastle 12/10
It should be a relatively close game, but the Falcons have been punching above their weight recently, and will smell the injured Saracens’ blood. I’m going against the odds and predicting Newcastle to win by seven or more.
