Anton Marcus, bidding for his fifth July win, was quizzed by Neil Andrews on Tellytrack’s Kenilworth coverage on Saturday about his decision to prefer the Brett Crawford runner.

He said: “It was a very hard decision. As much confidence as I have in Edict Of Nantes I have ridden The Conglomerate in his last two starts and I think he could have the run of the race. He is definitely one of the older horses to beat.

“Edict Of Nantes is a better horse on a galloping course but I think he is untapped. I am holding thumbs that he gets a trouble-free race. That is the most important thing.”

“Edict Of Nantes is in a good place but this July is a very open race.”

TRAINER Comments:
Trainer Brett Crawford: “My stable is in top form at the moment and I am very happy with my horses. Edict has come through his last run like he never had a run – he is very well.”

“Is fit and well and I am not worried about the draw.”

MAGIC TIPS (Winning Form) Comment:
This star three-year old is a dual Grade 1 winner this campaign and his handy galloping mass of 54kgs is a major plus over this distance. In all honesty, he seemed to have a rushed preparation leading up to the Daily News 2000 but still showed his brilliance when holding off a fit and determined AL SAHEM and undoubtedly deserved his short four week break. His gallop was a worry that he may be very keen in the early stages of this event but he has a world class jockey up. Huge contender.

Star three-year old, huge contender, slow pace no issue.

HOLLYWOODBETS Comments:

  • Jockey Anton Marcus has ridden four horses to Vodacom Durban July victory. They are Dancing Duel (1993), El Picha (2000), Dunford (2005), and Hunting Tower (2007).
  • This will be Anton Marcus 22nd ride in the Durban July, his first being in 1989.
  • Trainer Brett Crawford has not trained a Durban July winner, but he has trained three J&B Met winners – including this year’s winner Whiskey Baron.
  • Brett Crawford’s best finish in a Durban July was with Futura in 2014, he finished 3rd. Futura followed it up with a 4th place finish the following year.
  • Edict of Nantes will jump from stall gate 13. The last horse to win from this draw was Dancer’s Daughter (DH in 2008), and before that Greys Inn (2004). There have only been 6 winners from this draw.
