Purple Stays Winning

A pulsating two weeks of sporting and horse racing action saw plenty of purple-clad athletes rise up to achieve some magnificent results!

Chief among these results was Real Madrid’s 4-1 dismantling of Juventus in the Champions League Final. Elsewhere, 40/1 shot Wings of Eagles won the Investec Derby while Orlando City put in a cracking shift to earn a share of the spoils against the free-scoring Chicago Fire.

The Cream Always Rises to the Top
The current batch of Real Madrid players are absolute world beaters, and it was perhaps fitting that they underpinned their title of Kings of Europe in a Royal Purple kit. From achieving La Decima (winning 10 Champions League titles / European Cups) in 2014, the side have gone on to do what no other team in the Champions League era has managed to do – defend their UCL title.

Los Blancos oozed class all evening as they bossed a tactically astute Juventus side under the roof at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Not even an absolute worldie from former Atletico man, Mario Mandžukić could take the polish off a resounding 4-1 victory which saw Cristiano Ronaldo net twice, while Marco Asensio and Casemiro each got their names of the scoresheet.

The Underdog’s Fairy-tale
Surrey’s Epsom Downs Racecourse played host to one of the biggest horse racing upsets of the calendar year as Wings of Eagles – the joint-lowest rated Epsom Derby winner this century – ran on late to claim the 2017 Investec Derby.

The 40/1 colt was ridden to victory by Padraig Beggy in the unmistakable purple and white of owner, Derrick Smith. Wings of Eagles was the longest-priced winner of the race since Snow Knight who won at 50/1 in 1974! An excellent day at the races for all involved!

Orlando City on the Up
10-man Orlando City put in a rousing display last week to secure a point after Rafael Ramos was sent off in the 26th minute – a decision that has been overturned by an independent panel for the MLS. The Lions dug deep on Monday and proved exactly why they are considered the most improved sides in the MLS this season.

Former Manchester United centre-half Jonathan Spector starred in the draw as he marshaled his defence magnificently to shut-out the free-scoring Fire, keeping the pressure on the teams at the top of the Eastern Conference.
