Breaking News: Force To Finally Be Cut from Super Rugby?

Lions v Sharks quarter-final Preview - Three Rugby Players One Being Tackled With Ball in Hand
The Western Force are set to be the final team to be cut from Super Rugby with the ARU winning its arbitration case with Rugby Western Australia.
The longest running rugby saga of the year seemed to have reached a close last night with the Australian Rugby Union winning its case to discontinue the Force’s Super Rugby license. The Force, who finished second on the Australian Conference log, can feel mightily aggrieved about the decision especially considering the last-place finishers, the Melbourne Rebels were the other side up for the chop.

*UpdateThe Force have been granted an injunction by the New South Wales Supreme Court which states the contracted Western Force players will not be allowed to be moved on by the ARU until the matter is resolved. A long legal battle is now likely.

There have been massive ramifications for the ARU with CEO Bill Pulver falling on his sword. The Chief Executive Office of the Australian Rugby Union has decided to step down from his position as soon as the ARU can find a suitable replacement for him. Mr Pulver was extremely vocal about keeping the five Australian franchises in Super Rugby and his failure to do so is the main reason for him stepping down.

There could be further drama yet to unfold however with Rugby Western Australia threatening to take the ARU to the Supreme Court of New South Wales should the ARU follow through on its decision.

Staunch Force supporter and Australian mining magnet, Andrew Forest, has made it clear that he is willing to back his side’s appeal. The full-on Force fan was quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald as stating “This could be a try against us but it’s not the end of the game. It’s purely a first try against us, we’re not giving up on this. I assured the Force I’d do everything in my power to not only see the franchise survive but thrive."

Those are some strong words from a man with enough money to keep this case running for another decade. The question is, will the Force be with Mr Forest’s beloved franchise?
