Italian Serie A Outright Preview

Italian Serie A - outright preview

The Italian Serie A gets underway on the 19th of August! Check out our footy writer’s season predictions.

It’s not long now until the Italian Serie A kicks back into action, gracing us all with the beautiful game. For far too long Juventus have dominated, claiming a record six consecutive Scudettos with no team able to match them from game one all the way through to matchday 38!

Roma and Napoli have come closest to dethroning the kings of Italy in recent seasons but have lacked the cutting edge needed to topple the Old Lady. Will the 2017/18 season follow suit or will we finally see a genuine title-contender? Let’s find out.

Scudetto Challengers

Juventus
The Old Lady can’t afford to be complacent this season with the fallen giants of Italy gunning for their head. Juventus have made six quality signings to strengthen what is already a dream team but can they do it again and make it seven titles on the spin? Only time will tell but at 6/10, they are well worth a punt to reclaim what has basically been a floating trophy for the Italian champions.

Napoli
The Azzurri are priced up as second best favourites to win the all-important Scudetto at 6/1. Napoli have proven their ability to compete at the highest level and will be determined to finally get their hands on the Scudetto that has eluded them since their 1989-90 title-winning season. They have made two signings this summer with the acquisitions of Brazilian midfielder Leandrinho from Atletica Ponte Preta, as well as forward Leonardo Pavoletti from Genoa. For Napoli, it’s a question of depth and quality ahead of the new campaign and I feel they might just fall short once again.

Roma
The Giallorossi will be looking to go one better after placing second last season. With the signings of Argentinian defender Federico Fazio from Tottenham and Brazilian defender Juan Jesus from Inter Milan, there will be hope of Roma claiming top spot. However, I doubt either player will make that much of an impact on the team or their chances of winning the Scudetto.

Inter Milan
Inter Milan have made a number of signings this transfer window but just like the past season, it will take time for the team to gel. A lack of consistency was one of the main factors behind their mediocre campaign and manager Luciano Spalletti will be looking to whip the side into shape and back to their best by the time the league starts. I can see Inter sealing a place in the top four maybe, but just don’t think they have a title-winning team.

AC Milan
Just like their Milan rivals, the Rossoneri have been busy in the transfer window. The difference is that they have made signings capable of taking AC Milan back to their good old glory days. Like Inter Milan, team chemistry might slow them down in terms of their title ambitions but the Rossoneri will be well aware of that. They are likely to be up there with the likes of Roma and Napoli but it’s too soon for them to give Juventus a run for their money – well at least not right now.

Verdict: Juventus (6/10)
Breaking Juventus’ voodoo over the title won’t be easy and I just don’t think any team other than the Old Lady have the sort of ruthlessness to take what has become their own.
