Bafana Bafana still in control of World Cup Qualification

Two soccer players chasing the ball down in the big boxOur analyst gives insight into Bafana Bafana's chances of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

After suffering a 2-1 defeat at Cape Verde, South Africa must have been delighted to see Burkina Faso and Senegal cancelling each other out in the other Group D fixture and that has given Bafana Bafana another opportunity to be the masters of their own destiny. Let’s take a look at what the past round’s results mean.

After three rounds of fixtures, South Africa are now tied on four points with Senegal and both teams are only one point adrift of top-placed Burkina Faso. With each team left with three games, it means if Bafana Bafana win all their remaining matches they qualify.

If they win their matches, regardless what happens in other games they would take points off all their opponents and they would finish on 13 points. I do believe Bafana will beat Cape Verde on Tuesday at Moses Mabhida Stadium and they have homeground advantage against Burkina Faso as well.

The trickiest encounter is the away clash at Senegal, considering the fact that South Africa’s victory over them at FNB Stadium was marred by horrendous referring decisions which saw Joseph Lamptey being banned for life from officiating. I’ve got a feeling that Senegal would still have a chance to qualify by then and this would be like a cup final.

Bafana Bafana’s next match is the return leg against Cape Verde on Tuesday 5 September 2017. They will then host Burkina Faso at FNB Stadium on 7 October and wrap up with Senegal on 6 November away from home.
