Bafana Bafana have relinquished their perfect chance to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia when they snatched a defeat from jaws of a victory against Group D whipping boys, Cape Verde. Before the match started the South African national side was tied on four points with top-placed Burkina Faso and all they had to do was to win their match and hope for the best.

South Africa took the lead through a sumptuous Tokelo Rantie strike in the first half but Cape Verde were back in a trice as Nuno Rocha caught Bafana’s defence napping and pounced to make it 1-1. Before we knew it, Burkina Faso were 2-1 up a few moments before the interval as Nuno Rocha completed his brace to make it 2-1 to the hosts from the penalty spot.

Eric Mathoho’s poor tackle put a massive dent to Stuart Baxter’s hopes of coming back into the game as it saw him get his marching orders. The rest of the encounter was about 10-men Bafana throwing everything they have to a defensively resolute Cape Verde who were quite content with the three points. This was Cape Verde’s first win after they lost their opening two games.

As it stands, Bafana stay second in Group D with four points after one win, one draw, and one defeat. They have the same amount of points as Burkina Faso who are riding the crest of the wave, having played a game less. Burkina Faso battle with second-placed Senegal on Saturday. That’s another game to watch as now both Senegal and Cape Verde have three points, making the group wide open.

Bafana Bafana play Cape Verde in the return leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday 5 September 2017. Who do you think will qualify?
