Ah, French rugby, you unpredictable beast, you. If you haven’t guessed it by the opening sentence, the Top 14 once again threw up some mammoth shocks last weekend, with the biggest upset seeing Racing Metro go down to Agen.

And while upsets are well and good, the highlight of last weekend’s action was Sunday’s titanic battle between giants Clermont and Toulon which saw the former emerge victorious by five points.

Clermont will once again be involved in the pick of the actions as they take on La Rochelle in the opening game of Round 3.

La Rochelle v Clermont Auvergne | Saturday 9 September | Stade Marcel Deflandre | 14:45

To Win (80 Mins)
La Rochelle 6/10 | Draw 18/1 | Clermont 14/10

Clermont make the trip to La Rochelle in this weekend’s opening encounter. The visitors will be in buoyant mood having bounced back from their opening day defeat to the Bordeaux Begles by beating Toulon last Sunday. La Rochelle endured a less prosperous second round as they went down 35-24 to Stade Francais.

Verdict: La Rochelle 6/10
This should be an absolute cracker of a game with both sides willing to run the ball from all quarters. I’m backing the hosts to come out on top in what should be a high-scoring affair.

Onnayax v Agen | Saturday 9 September | Stade Charles Maton | 18:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Oyonnax 1/4 | Draw 20/1 | Agen 29/10

Next up we have a clash between the two promoted sides, Oyonnax and Agen. The former comes into this one off the back of a 31-point defeat away to Montpellier while the visitors make the trip having pulled off a miraculous 23-19 win over Racing Metro.

Verdict: Agen 29/10
I quite fancy the away win here. Agen showed some real character last week and if they play in the same manner they could well pick up a vital away victory. My advice here is to have a small strike on the away win.

Brive v Racing Metro | Saturday 9 September | Stade Amedee-Domenech | 18:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Brive 6/10 | Draw 17/1 | Racing 27/20

Racing Metro will be looking to bounce back from their shock four-point defeat to Agen when they take on Brive this Saturday evening. This game could be an ideal hit out for the Parisians as Brive are yet to win a game, going down to La Rochelle during the opening weekend and then losing to Lyon by 15 points in the second round.

Verdict: Racing 27/20
Yes, they’re playing some pathetic rugby at the moment but I still think Metro will be able to beat a Brive side who have looked horrid thus far.

Castres v Montpellier | Saturday 9 September | Stade Pierre-Antoinne | 20:45

To Win (80 Mins)
Castres 4/10 | Draw 19/1 | Montpellier 2/1

I’m going to make this one short and sweet so you can get on the Montpellier win. The visitors have been simply sensational winning their opening two fixtures by massive margins, while Castres have won one and lost one.

Verdict: Montpellier 2/1
This is an absolute gift of a bet. I’m going to be having a large strike on the away win.

Pau v Lyon | Sunday 10 September | Stade du Hameau | 12:30

To Win (80 Mins)
Pau 4/10 | Draw 20/1 | Lyon 2/1

A very impressive Lyon side make the trip to Pau in Sunday’s opening fixture. The visitors head into this one off the back of successive wins having beaten Stade Francais in the opening round and Brive in the second round. Pau, on the other hand, are yet to win a game having gone down heavily to Toulon in the opening week and then losing to Toulouse by four points in the second week.

Verdict: Lyon 2/1
It’s a big risk and a minuscule stake is certainly the play for me, but I like the Lyon win here.

Toulon v Toulouse | Sunday 10 September | Stade Felix-Mayol | 16:50

To Win (80 Mins)
Toulon 1/10 | Draw 30/1 | Toulouse 52/10

Toulon and Toulouse will bring the curtain down on the third round of the 2017/18 French Top 14 season when they meet at the Stade Felix-Mayol this Sunday afternoon. The hosts come into this one off the back of a narrow away defeat to Clermont while the visitors make the trip having edged Pau by four points.

Verdict: Toulon 1/10
Toulon are extremely short here but are still worth backing as they are a much stronger side then the visitors.
