AC Milan have lost patience with manager Vincenzo Montella, who has been relieved of duty to be replaced with former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

The news comes after Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Torino left the Rossoneri seventh in the Serie A standings, 18 points adrift of leaders Napoli.

Their choice to replace him is a former player who is well-known to the fans after 13 successful seasons in the first team, and who has most recently been in charge of the club’s youth team.

“AC Milan announce to have parted ways with [Vincenzo Montella],” the club posted on Twitter. “Management of the first team is entrusted to Gennaro Gattuso, who leaves his position as Primavera coach and to whom we wish the best of luck.”

Gattuso is not the club’s first former player to be fast-tracked to the manager’s role, as three of Gattuso’s former teammates, Clarence Seedorf, Filippo Inzaghi, Cristian Brocchi, have all taken charge of the first team in recent years, with limited success.

The former Italy international started his managerial career as a player-manager at Swiss side Sion in 2013. He then had a short-lived and unsuccessful spell at Palermo in Serie B, a controversial stay at cash-strapped Greek side OFI Crete and, most recently, was back in Italy with Pisa, who he led to Serie B promotion before departing.
