Aviva Premiership: Bath Rugby v Exeter Chiefs Preview

Aviva-Premiership-Exeter-versus-Saracens-Preview

Runaway log-leaders Exeter have another chance at putting further distance between themselves and the chasing pack when they travel to the Rec on Friday evening to take on Bath.

Both sides, who were set to battle it out in the final of the Anglo-Welsh Cup last weekend, but which was postponed due to bad weather, will be eager to cause some psychological damage ahead of the title-decider.

Head coach Todd Blackadder would have been left shaking his head in dismay after the final round of the Six Nations. The news that British & Irish Lion Anthony Watson has been ruled out for the rest of the season is a serious blow. The winger-come-fullback has been exceptional this season and his absence is sure to be felt by a club currently languishing in seventh-position on the Premiership standings.

With the men from Somerset being out of contention for their domestic league, their attention will be solely focused on winning the Anglo-Welsh Cup final and securing qualification for next season’s Champions Cup. This weekend’s matchup represents the opportunity to take a step further to achieving both goals, with a win sure to give them enormous confidence heading into the final against the same side whilst keeping up the midtable pressure in the league simultaneously. They can ill-afford a slip-up.

Exeter

The Chiefs are virtually guaranteed to finish the regular season in pole position. Only a cataclysmic run of results would see them surrender their place at the top of the Premiership standings, honestly, we don’t tend to see many of those, do we?

They should cement a home semi-final in the weeks to come and anything can transpire from there on out. It really is their title to lose.

Despite a disappointing run in Europe, Exeter still have a shot at securing a season double by winning their Anglo-Welsh Cup final against Bath as well as defending their Premiership crown. A victory this weekend won’t come easy, but it sure as hell will go a long way for the Devon men in their quest for glory this season. Theirs is a superb footballing side under Rob Baxter and I’d be extremely surprised to see them lose out on both titles.

Verdict: Exeter 1/1
What can I say? They simply know how to win when it matters. I’m backing them to take to take the victory and ride a wave of confidence into their upcoming final.
