Contenders
The tournament gets underway on Friday with qualifying fixtures between the minnow sides. Saturday will see the big guns enter the tournament with HSBC Seven World Series regulars like Fiji, South Africa, and New Zealand all making their bows.

The aforementioned sides currently top the betting boards with the Fijians trading at under even money, South Africa are currently available at 22/10 while you can get the New Zealanders at 6/1.

The Fijians rightfully come into this one as favourites as they have the most well-balanced squad and don’t have any major injury concerns. The Islanders will also be smarting from their World Series defeat and will be determined to end the season with some silverware in the bag.

The South Africans have been hardest hit by injury with Seabelo Senatla, Chris Dry, and Cecil Africa all missing out. The Blitzboks are also without the services of the talisman Kwagga Smith as he is on Super Rugby duty with the Lions.

The New Zealanders may come into this one third on the betting boards but they certainly have the pedigree to go all the way. Not only are the Kiwis reigning World Cup holders but they also won this year’s Commonwealth Games title. Underestimate them at your peril.

Dark Horse
My tournament dark horse for this one is the host nation. The United States has a very well-balanced squad that features the tenacious Danny Barrett as well as speedsters Carlin Isles and Perry Baker. The majority of their squad turned out at the Rio Olympics, so they know how to perform on the biggest of stages.

Verdict: USA 7/1
I’m going to have a crack on the host nation this weekend. They know how to produce the goods on home soil having won the Las Vegas Sevens this season. They represent great value at 7/1!
