Glen Kotzen: Star of the Week
The Kotzen name has been synonymous with South African horseracing for many a decade and Cape based trainer GLEN KOTZEN (47) is continuing the great work produced by his family. He has his own private establishment called Woodhill Racing Estate that houses 100 horses and he feels that working from home is a great advantage as he gets to spend plenty of time with his family. He also has a permanent yard at Summerveld in KZN, managed by his long-time assistant Frikkie Greyling, where he has 40 boxes. Glen tasted success in South Africa’s most prestigious race, the Durban July in 2009 when his champion, the late Big City Life won in good style as a three-year old. He has since produced another champion of note, the classy filly PRINCESS VICTORIA who has already done the stable proud by winning four Grade 1 races at two and three years old, en route to claiming consecutive Equus Awards. The daughter of Victory Moon is back in the province for the winter season and Glen expects another big campaign from her. WINNING FORM wishes Glen Kotzen Racing everything of the best for the season, as well as in their future endeavours and we will be watching the Princess’ progress with great interest.Aldo Domeyer: Star of the Week
ALDO DOMEYER (26) is a classic example of why perseverance pays off in life. In 2003, he was considered ‘not good enough’ by his riding masters at the South African Jockey Academy but his determination caused him to return a few years later. After riding just over 200 winners during his four-year apprenticeship, Aldo has won close on double those races now and has firmly established himself as one of the promising youngsters in the game. His recent victory aboard Martial Eagle in the J & B Met was his first Grade 1 winner and he has his sights set on many more. Being the son of legendary jockey Andrew Fortune, the jury was out on Aldo’s ability to follow the ‘big shoes’ of his father but he has had a great start to his brief career and WINNING FORM is confident that he can also one day claim the South African National Jockey’s Championship. He rides the Alan Greeff trained, PLACIDO in this Sunday’s Grade 3 East Cape Derby powered by Recall Security and Aldo is quietly confident of a big run from the son of Miesque’s Approval.Durban July 2013 Ante-Post Betting
The Durban July is now exactly two months away, and with the start of the Champions Season this past weekend (the 4th of May), we have seen our first supplementary entry since the First Acceptors were announced. This first entry is the Mike De Kock trained VERCINGETORIX, whose victory over CAPETOWN NOIR in the Gr2 KRA Guineas at Greyville on Saturday has placed her on top of the Durban July betting boards as the favourite to take the R3,5 Million Grade 1 race. BEACH BEAUTY who flew home in the Drill Hall Stakes remains at 8/1, and her liking for the Greyville track must make her a big contender in this year's race. The First Acceptors betting is closed, and the Ante-Post betting is now open for the Durban July. New supplementary entries will be added to the betting as they are announced. Take your bets now at www.hollywoodbets.net!Karl Neisius: Star of the Week
Veteran Cape-based jockey KARL NEISIUS (56) has enjoyed a wonderful career in horseracing and brought up his 3000th winner aboard the classy sprinter CAPE ROYAL, just over a year ago. He has amassed another century of winners since, including Grade 1 victories in the Cape Guineas and Derby with the brilliant son of Western Winter, CAPETOWN NOIR. The Dean Kannemeyer inmate is the 7/1 ante-post favourite for the Vodacom Durban July and goes through his prep in this Saturday’s KRA Guineas at Greyville where he is likely to start at very restricted odds. Of course, Karl’s solitary July success came when he expertly steered Flaming Rock to victory in 1991 from stall gate 20. Karl seems quietly confident of a successful winter raid and WINNING FORM wishes him everything of the best during the season.Jeff Freedman: Star of the Week
Former jockey JEFF FREEDMAN (54) was forced to retire due to injury but switched to training in the late 90’s. After starting off training at Newmarket Racecourse, Jeff relocated to Durban and Clairwood Park, in particular. He currently has a small string of just 26 horses but the stable have a decent strike rate. The yard sends out two runners to compete at Grade 1 level on the Highveld at Turffontein on Champion’s Day, this Saturday and Freedman particularly fancies the chances of his three-year old son of Mogok, WILD ONE who takes on fourteen other rivals in the SA Derby over 2450m. His charge was runner-up in the recent Derby Trial and is better off at the weights with a few of his rivals and Jeff is confident that the extra distance will suit him down to the ground. With HOLLYWOODBETS.NET offering 13/2 on the colt, punters could be in for a treat. The stable’s other runner on the day, GUANTANAMERA takes on the country’s best sprinters in the Grade 1 Computaform Sprint and reading between the lines, the yard will be elated if he were to finish in the money. WINNING FORM wishes the stable everything of the best on the ‘big day’ and will be closely watching both the runners’ performance.Craig Zackey: Star of the Week
18 year old apprentice jockey CRAIG ZACKEY is in the third year of his apprenticeship with the South African Jockey Academy, based in Summerveld. Prior to joining the academy, Craig had never sat on a horse, but he has quickly developed a love and passion for the thoroughbred. After a slow start to his career, he has racked up fifteen winners, to date, which leaves him five short of losing his 4kgs apprentice claim. He is yet to compete in his first Grade 1 but recently partnered the dual Grade 1 winning colt Slumdogmillionaire to a start-to-finish victory in a Conditions Plate at Turffontein. Hardly surprisingly, he rates the son of Strike Smartly as the best horse that he has won on. Craig is a well-spoken, focused and confident youngster that is doing the Academy proud and WINNING FORM wishes him everything of the best in his future endeavours.Stanley Ferreira: Star of the Week
STANLEY FERREIRA (60) has been in racing for close-on four decades. He was well on his way to becoming a hugely successful trainer when he decided to leave the game and relocate to Tzaneen. He was away from training for eleven years and Stan says it was much needed stress-less time for him. In August 2009 he was again granted a trainer’s licence with his main patron being his long-time friend Roland Bouwer. Starting with only three owners and ten horses, he has slowly been working his way back. Today he has 48 horses at his Vaal base. There is no doubt that he has retained his enthusiasm and love of the game. The way his horses look, and run, is proof that he still has the ‘magic’ to train big race winners. Any day soon punters can expect to see one of Stan’s charges being backed off the boards and will know that he is well and truly back. Until then WINNING FORM will watch his progress with keen anticipation.Chase Maujean - Star of the Week
27 year old CHASE MAUJEAN’s recent riding career has been a revelation and his success is a perfect example to youngsters on why never to give up. After battling for many years in KZN, Chase was holidaying with his family in Gauteng when he was offered a ride. He won on that mount as well as on his two subsequent rides. Hardly surprisingly, he was offered a full-time job and the rest as they say is history. He is currently having the best season of his life with 28 winners, a far cry from his previous best. He has struck up a fine partnership with ex-jockey and now accomplished trainer Lucky Houdalakis for whom he won the Ipi Tombi Challenge on Demanding Lady. Chase has enjoyed guidance from the great former jockey Garth Puller and with Anton Marcus as his icon, he will continue his resurgence. WINNING FORM continues to be mesmerized by Chase’s achievements on the Highveld and wish him even much more success in the future.Geoff Woodruff: Star of the Week
Five-time South African champion trainer GEOFF WOODRUFF (56) is the son-in-law of legendary trainer Terrance Millard. Geoff has firmly etched his name into the South African racing record books and has won two July’s and two Summer Cups. He has won close to 70 Grade 1 contests and over 200 Graded events in his distinguished career which began a quarter of a century ago. He began his local training career in the Western Cape and after excelling, he made the bold move to relocate to Gauteng. It didn’t take him long to make his mark on racing on the Highveld where he was initially stationed at the Vaal. These days his training base is at Randjesfontein and the move is paying healthy dividends as the yard has been in excellent form over the past few weeks. His star charge, TELLINA was impressive when winning the Guineas last month and will take his place alongside stable mates, KILLUA CASTLE (3rd in the Guineas) and SABADELL in Saturday’s running of the R2 million SA Classic to be run over 1800m at Turffontein. Geoff is confident that his star will relish the extra furlong and will give a very good account of himself. WINNING FORM wishes the Woodruff yard everything of the best on Classic Day.SA Classic & SA Fillies Classic 2013 Final Fields
On Easter Saturday (the 30th of March), Cherry On The Top and Tellina will repesctively continue their challenge for Triple Tiara and Triple Crown glory at Turffontein racecourse. Cherry On The Top tops the betting boards for the Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic as 8/10 favourite, while Tellina heads the betting as 28/10 favourite for the SA Classic. Both horses came out on top in their respective races over a mile at the beginning of this month (in the Guineas), but the extra furlong could prove the deciding factor in the second leg here. Below are the final fields for both features with draws and weights. Betting is now available at Hollywoodbets.net!Pat Shaw: Star of the Week
PATRICK BERNARD SHAW (56) can justly claim to be the forerunner of South African trainers plying their trade overseas. After training in South Africa for many years he felt that he had achieved what he could in SA and decided to take on the challenge of training in Singapore. While in Singapore he has trained some top horses, including one of the world’s best sprinters, Rocket Man who is owned by Pat’s biggest supporter, Fred Crabbia. To date Rocket Man has earned US$ 6.7million and still has some racing in him. Pat has recently formed a syndicate called Tmen Stables which is represented not only in South Africa but in Malaysia, Australia and Singapore too. The syndicate is represented by trainers Mike de Kock and Robbie Hill in SA. ALEXANDRA PALACE has to be the best horse that the syndicate have at the moment and it is likely that he will take his place in next weekend’s R2million SA Classic. WINNING FORM wishes Pat Shaw and Tmen Stables all the best for the future and we will be watching them and Alexandra Palace closely in times to come.King's Cup Clairwood Sunday 24th March

De Kock Runners Meydan Thursday 28 February
Continuing his successful run of form in quest for Dubai World Cup glory, Mike De Kock returns to Meydan on Thursday the 28th of February with five runners. There is still the dissappointment lingering after Igugu's defeat the in the Gr2 Balanchine last week, but Mike explains here that the run for Igugu was a lot better than people think. He also said that she needed the run and should fair better next time out. On Thursday, his top steads lie with Amanee and Emotif. Amanee takes part in the Al Dana 1600m handicap with stablemate Disa Leader. Amanee ran 2nd to Saijaa (Igugu's conqueror last Thursday) in a feature race a few weeks, and is considered a top sort for this race. Disa Leader should give a good show of himself, but would surpise all by winning this one. Emotif, De Kocks 3 year old filly, takes part in the 1900m UAE Oaks. She has struggled to come to terms with the Dubai heat, but should be ready to make the most of the extra ground here, and is considered the top contender. David Livingston and Anaerobio take part in the CBD 1400m (Race 6) where both will be needing the run. Get top reporter Pat Cummings (Dubai Race Night) comments on each De Kock runner here, as well as some great images.
Allan Preddy: Winner TAB Satellite Tournament Of Champions 2013
ALLAN PREDDY (57) is a loyal patron of South Africa's Premier bookmaker, HOLLYWOODBETS.NET and has enjoyed some great successes as a punter, over the years. He has been in horseracing for more than four decades, during which time he was married in The Pavilion Restaurant at Turffontein racecourse in 1983. Preddy has his own business that he runs from home and is lucky enough to watch the day's racing from the comfort of his lounge. He owns shares in a few horses in the country and his most memorable July winner was the late Big City Life. Horseracing has always been his hobby and on 16th February he put his punting skills and horseracing knowledge to the test when he entered the TAB Satellite Tournament Of Champions at Turffontein racecourse and duly walked away with first prize of R78 000, plus his winnings on the day of R22 804.00. Hollywoodbets.net would like to congratulate Preddy on this great achievement and wish him all the success in his punting in the future.Mike De Kock Runners Meydan Thursday 21st February
The much anticipated wait is over as Mike De Kock presents the South African champion filly IGUGU to the world at Meydan on Thursday. The 2011 Durban July and 2012 J&B Met winner is one of South Africa's favourite thoroughbreds, and fans have had to wait for over 12 months since last seeing Igugu run. She will make her debut in the 1800m Gr2 Balanchine (Race 4), where some think she has already chased the opposition away, with only seven runners carded for the race. However, Mike warns pundits on getting to confident on her run, as she is mortal, and is coming off a long rest. Mike's other runners on the night include American bred AWAIT THE DAWN in the 2nd race, where the 6 year old is said to be a big runner. SPECIFIC GRAVITY will have to give everything he's got in the 3rd race if he is to be considered for the Dubai Racing Carnival, while MUSHREQ has been given high hopes for the Group 2 Al Fahidi Fort over 1600m in the 6th race. Mushreq will be joined by stablemates MASTER OF HOUNDS and MUSIR in the same race, but both are requiring the outing here. Get a good look here at all Mike De Kock's runners at Meydan on Thursday, which include great images and comments.
Black Caviar Aims for 23 From 23
Black Caviar, the highest-ranked thoroughbred racing anywhere in the world, has her 23rd start in a race she has won twice before and which this year has been named in her honour. If she wins the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes as convincingly as trainer Peter Moody expects her to, the world champion sprinter will race again. If she doesn't, Moody will recommend her immediate retirement. Black Caviar will have seven opponents in the 1000m dash down the Flemington straight, none of which are in her class. She is officially rated 24 points - around 10 lengths - clear of her nearest rival. Victory in the Lightning will add $300,000 to Black Caviar's account, taking her prize money total to $7,302,436. It would also place her firmly at top of the world rankings - at least until the European flat racing season gets into full swing next month. Black Caviar's trainer Peter Moody says 'only bad luck' will beat the star mare at Flemington. (Words courtesy of ninemsn.com.au)
After a successful start to his Dubai campaign two weeks ago, Mike De Kock returns to Meydan with a world class string of runners, on hopes they will get a good prep in the lead up to the big Dubai Racing Carnival. Fans will have to wait another week until Igugu makes her debut on the track, but the unbeaten champion juvenile SOFT FALLING RAIN will start as favourite in the UAE 2000 Guineas (race 3). DADDY LONG LEGS will make his debut for the Mike De Kock stable after failing to do the duty for Aiden O'Brian last year in Dubai, with De Kock reckoning this Dubai World Cup hopeful will show good improvement. ZAHEE is considered a big runner tonight, while Mike will also be hoping REROUTED can reproduce the form he showed a fort night ago. JARDIM, ANAEROBIO, and KAVANAGH will also be representing the Mike De Kock stable, but whether they will run into the money is yet to be seen. Get all the details of Mike's runners below, as well as his comments on each runner.Betfair Ascot Chase 2013
Jump season is in full swing in the UK, with all focus heading towards the Cheltenham festival in March. There are a host of Grade 1 races in the upcoming month, and the Betfair Ascot Chase this Saturday will definitely be one to watch. At the moment two horses are battling for the favourite position in Captain Chris and Cue Card. Captain Chris did finish 20 lengths ahead of Cue Card in a race at Kempton on Boxing Day, however the latter's trainer Colin Tizzard reckons Cue Card is in good nick, and this will be the ideal race for him. Chasing up on them will be Finians Rainbow trained by Nicky Henderson, a trainer who has won this feature race three times. Biting at his heels will be Somersby, Ghizao and Albertas Run. Read below for more info on the runners, ante-post betting and some great facts on this Grade 1 race!
Martial Eagle Soars to Victory in "Made To Fly" J&B Met
Aldo Domeyer and Martial Eagle fought off a hard challenge from Hill Fifty Four to win the 2013 J&B Met at Kenilworth. Martial Eagle defied his 75/1 odds to earn the Grade 1 victory for trainer Yogas Govender - his first ever attempt at the J&B Met. Martial Eagle is owned by Mrs Sabine Plattner and was bred by Wilgerbosdrift Stud. Vaughan Marshall's Hill Fifty Four finished a neck behind under a good ride from MJ Byleveld, while Beach Beauty ran on under Sean Cormack to earn the third spot. Durban July winner Pomodoro, who led most of the race under jockey Pierre Strydom, finished fourth.Kenilworth J&B Met 2013 Best Bets

J&B Met 2013 Trainer Comments
The 2013 J&B Met is upon us! One of South Africa's most anticipated race days will see the best thoroughbreds in the country battle it out over 2000m on the Kenilworth race track in the Western Cape. Glitz, glamour and fashion might be the call of order on either side of the track, but when it comes to the turf, there's no stopping these majestic beauties. Brett Crawford's JACKSON will have it all to prove in this year's race, as neigh sayers have failed to see this colt's true potential since his win in the Daily News in 2012. He will renew his battle with Sean Tarry's POMODORO, the 2012 Durban July winner, who will look to emmulate Igugu's feat of a Durban July/Met double. Winning Form caught up with all the trainers to get their comments on their runners, and their chances come the starting bell. Each runner has a picture provided, so get to know their colours so you can shout them home come this Saturday!J&B Met 2013 Final Fields - All Feature Races
The J&B Met 2013 spectacle is almost upon us, and the final declarations for the feature races have been accepted and closed! There are three Grade 1 races on the day, with the headlining race being the J&B Met in the 8th race. There has been talk that this will be the most competitive Met in years, and with Variety Club the notable exclusion from the race, it will be a big fight between JACKSON and POMODORO for the title. There is also the Investec Cape Derby, which will see the best 3 year olds in South Africa go hammer and tongs, where all eyes will be on the Dean Kannemyer trained CAPETOWN NOIR. Following the Derby will be the Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, where HAMMIE'S HOOKER will look to do the job for Mike Bass. The final race of the day will be the Grade 2 J&B Jet Stayers over 2800m - big battle between BLAKE and ILSANPIETRO! The draws for the big race have been announced and the betting for the J&B Met is now available!
With the running of the J&B Met going as far back as 1883 (officially with J&B as the sponsors in 1978), this prestigious race has been filled with an incredible history of come-from-behind victories, massive margined victories, and ofcourse the odd upset. Anyone who has been to a J&B Met will know there's just something special about the race. Why is it the one horse racing event that always sends chills down the spine? Why is it the one that defines a champion? Legends such as Politician, Renounce, London News, Horse Chestnut and Pocket Power. We tracked down some of the well known faces of the horse racing industry to get their insight into the J&B Met, and which for them stood out as their most incredible moments. Insights are provided by none other than Neil Andrews, Mike De Kock, Shaheen Shaw, Jimmy Lithgow, Robyn Louw, and Julie Alexander. They also leave us their prediction on who they think will get written into the history books this Saturday.J&B Met Memories by Jimmy Lithgow
Jimmy Lithgow, Tellytrack presenter and fountain of knowledge - provides us with his best J&B Met memories. A very entertaining read!I have been looking back at the results of past J & B Mets, to see if I can pinpoint any of which were especially memorable for me, and have worked out that I have probably attended about 27 runnings of the Met over the past 30 years, since Arctic Cove won in 1983.
Mark Anthony (7 lengths) in 1988, and Horse Chestnut (8 lengths), in 1999, have been the most impressive winners I have watched but London News (1997) and Imperious Sue (1998) have given me the most pleasure.
The Dubai World Cup at Meydan is one of the most anticipated Group 1 races in the world of horse racing. A $10 million purse attracts the best thoroughbreds around the world to fight it out over 2000m. Apart from this feature, the entire Dubai Racing Carnival is a marvellous specatacle. There is a big South African interest in Dubai, with trainer Mike De Kock leading the way with a plethora of horses taking to the track - some pundits considering it the best stable he has had in Dubai ever! Such names as Igugu, Musir, The Apache, Rumya and Zanzamar are amongst just some of the names that have been nominated for the feature races on the day. Although there is massive doubt over whether Joey Ramsden's Variety Club will venture to Dubai, his nomination has been accepted. Singapore based Patrick Shaw also has runners nominated for the big meeting, including the Fred Crabia owned speedster Rocket Man. Check out all the South African interest nominations below.
There is more high class racing in the Cape this Saturday as Kenilworth plays host to the R600 000 Grade 1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship over 1000m. What A Winter is the pick of the older brigade as he looks to go one better than his runner-up spot behind the brilliant and now retired, Val De Ra, in last year's running of this race. However, despite the ratings suggesting otherwise, he will have a race on his hands as he faces two up-and-coming youngsters in the form of Cape Royal (bidding for four wins on the trot) from the Kannemeyer yard and the flying filly, Via Africa (won her last four starts, including the Southern Cross Stakes) and she hails from the stable of Winning Form sponsored trainer, Duncan Howells. Here's what the trainers had to say about their respective charges:J&B Met 2013 - Supplementary Entries
It's less than a month to one of South Africa's most anticipated race days, as we look at the supplementary entries for the 2013 J&B Met. With the L'Ormarins Queen's Plate being a good indication to who the top contenders will be, it's no surprise that Brett Crawford's JACKSON tops the ante-post betting board. Much will be expected of the 4 year old colt, especially after his poor showing at the 2012 Durban July. However, his 2nd place in the Queen's Plate will put him in good stead. Durban July winner POMODORO follows him in the betting, and after a third in the Queen's Plate, it would have been the perfect prep for this Sean Tarry colt. The Queen's Plate winner VARIETY CLUB shortened into 11/2 after his victory on Saturday, but whether the owners will run him or not is keeping everyone on their toes. Dennis Drier's BEACH BEAUTY has also come into the betting after his win in the Paddock Stakes on Saturday, but will face tougher oppostion here. It was the filly Igugu who triumphed here last year for Mike de Kock, so keep an eye out for his entry Mujaarib, who will look to do the deed for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum. Take advantage of the ante-post betting now, and get the value early on, only at Hollywoodbets.net!Variety Club wins the L'Ormarins Queen's Plate 2013
Variety Club proved his status as 2012 Horse of the Year by romping home in the R1 million 2013 L'Ormarins Queens Plate at Kenilworth on the 12th of January. Trained by Joey Ramsden and ridden to perfection by champion jockey Anton Marcus, Variety Club destroyed the star studded field by winning the mile race by just over a length. He beat off the Brett Crawford fancy Jackson, followed by Durban July winner Pomodoro, and the 150/1 shot Martial Eagle. After a false start where Variety Club backed out the gates as the rest of the field jumped, the field reassembled for a 2nd start. Marcus defeated the widest draw of 14 by getting Variety Club straight to the front, putting the 4 year old colt into the ideal position to control the race. Jackson and Pomodoro tailed Variety Club all the way to the turn, and once they hit the straight, Pomodoro proved a certain threat as he hit the inside rail, and Variety Club chose the straight line down the middle. However, once there was 400m to go, it was all wrapped up as Variety Club found another gear, and claimed the title as the 152nd champion of the L'Ormarins Queen's Plate. Congratulations to the owners Ingrid and Marcus Jooste, who walk away with the R625 000 first place prize. By winning this race, Variety Club qualifies himself for the 2013 Breeders Cup in the United States of America.L'Ormarins Queen's Plate 2013 - Final Field
The final field for the 2013 L'Ormarins Queen's Plate was announced on Thursday the 3rd of January, and what a field that has been assembled here! Will the Durban July winner POMODORO be able to follow up on his Durban July win, or will Joey Ramsden's VARIETY CLUB follow up on his status as one of the best milers in the country? Mike Bass' WHAT A WINTER will look to follow up on his victory in the Grade 2 Diadem Stakes (1200m), but will have tougher competition at this step up in distance. Justin Snaith return's this year with RUN FOR IT and CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD, and will look to follow up on his victory with Gimmethegreenlight in this race last year. JACKSON, MASTER PLAN, BRAVURA, TRIBAL DANCE, CASTLETHORPE and BULSARA will also be in the mix, but a cracker of a race awaits us. Check out the final field here. Leave us your comments below on who you think will come out on top in this year's Queen's Plate!

A review of Saturday’s St Leger Stakes by Dermot O’Connell - Doncaster, Race 4, 15th Sep
So for the first time since Nijinsky in 1970, a horse has the Triple Crown in his sights and that his name is CAMELOT is so apt that the fairy-tale may just come true. Will he follow in the footsteps of the legendary Nijinsky whose statue dominates the entrance to the famous Ballydoyle yard which has been home to both? This coming Saturday the unbeaten Camelot lines up at Doncaster with horse racing immortality just one race away! Trained in Ireland by arguably the world’s greatest trainer Aidan O’Brien, Camelot has taken English racing by storm with consummate wins in both the 2000 Guineas and the Derby.
