WTA: Western and Southern Open Preview

Damien Kayat examines the field that'll take part in the 2017 WTA Western and Southern Open which runs from 14 - 20 August. 

The women head to the co-sanctioned WTA-ATP Western and Southern Open this week with so many permutations at stake. Just to add a bit of historical context, this is the oldest tennis tournament in America that is still held in its original city.

As I have always noted, the absence of Serena Williams tends to highlight the schizophrenic nature of the draw, with selecting a champion always thwart with peril. Elina Svitolina’s victory in Montreal crystalized that very fact. Karolina Plisikova will be looking to keep her tenuous grip on the World Number 1 ranking at the same time as she aims to defend the title she won here last season.

The ATP Tour is definitely undergoing the first stages of what will ultimately be a changing of the guard in the sport as a whole. As much as journalists love to wax lyrical about the hegemony of the ‘Top 4’, and how that has elevated the game, one can almost taste the excitement that is being generated by the likes of Alex Zverev and Dominic Thiem.

Denis Shapovalov’s inspirational run towards the semi-finals last week in Montreal generated the most excitement I have seen on court outside of the Rafa-Roger rivalry. And with so many of the top players absent with injury concerns prior to the US Open, this week could represent further opportunity for the young guns to shine.
