The purpose of the swinger is to select two horses in a single race to finish in the first THREE places in ANY ORDER.
1. There are therefore THREE dividends (barring a dead-heat for third place) for each race – first and second, first and third and second and third.
2. Given a result of: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4, the winning swinger combinations would be:
1st and 2nd
1st and 3rd
2nd and 3rd.
[had the result of the race been 3 – 2 – 1 - 4, the combinations would have been the same as the ORDER of finish is irrelevant i.e. 1st and 3rd is the “same” as 3rd and 1st].
3. In the event that there is a dead-heat for THIRD place, there are FIVE dividends. In the example of a result being 1 – 2 – 3/4, the winning combinations would be:

4. You can select more than two horses to be in a swinger, but it costs you R1 per combination.
The punter can take three different kinds of swingers, they are:
a. Swinger
b. Boxed Swinger
c. Banker Swinger
a. Swinger:
This bet is to select two horses to run in the top three positions in any order.
Selection: horses 2 and 4.
Therefore if you only select two horses, it will cost you R1

b. Boxed Swinger:
This is a selection of horses where at least two must run in the top three positions.

Combinations:

[the number of horses selected multiplied by the number of horses selected less one, (as there cannot be a 1&1 combination) divided by 2 (as the finishing order is irrelevant].
There are 10 combinations (5 x 4 = 20/2 =10).
Should the result of the race in which the above bet was struck be 5 – 4 – 1 – 2, the winning combinations would be:

The ticket would then qualify for all three dividends, and pay-out the SUM of the above dividends i.e. R20.00.
c. Swinger Banker:
Same as a boxed swinger but the banked horse must run in the top three positions along with at least one of the other horses selected.

Banker 5 with 1, 2, 3 and 4 [5/1, 2, 3, 4] = 4 bets (combinations) = R4 (5&1, 5&2, 5&3, 5&4).
No.5 must finish in the first three positions as well at least one of the other selections.
Should the result of the race be 1 – 5 – 3 – 2, the bet would win on combinations 1&5 (R6.00) and 3&5 (R9.00) [the SUM of these two dividends = R15.00].
You can have up to two banker horses. This means that these two must run in the top three positions along with only one of the other horses selected.
Example:
Selection banker 2 and 5 with 4, 7 & 8 [2, 5/4, 7, 8] = 6 bets, 2&4, 2&7, 2&8, 5&4, 5&7, 5&8. No.2 and or No. 5 must finish in the first three positions as well as any one of the other selections.

NOTE:
1. In a field of 2-5 runners, there is only one swinger (dividend).
2. In a field of 6 or more runners there are three swingers (dividends).
3. In the case of a dead heat for third place in a field consisting of 6 or more runners, there will be “5” swinger payouts (or dividends), e.g., 1&2/1&3/1&3/2&3/2&3. Hollywood refunds your stake for the two horses that dead heat for third.
Swinger bets can be taken as a percentage.
