Magic Tips Best Bets

Jockey: Keagan DE MELO - Trainer:  Gavin VAN ZYL

BROWN SUGAR has had two smart efforts on the turf track and has definite scope for plenty more improvement. She was close-up in 3rd on both those occasions and the form was given a boost when the runner-up of those outings won subsequently. The Van Zyl inmate is slightly better drawn tonight and has strong claims of winning but the obvious concern is whether she will take to the polytrack. Of course, that applies to the rest of her rivals.

Jockey: Anthony DELPECH - Trainer: Mike DE KOCK

MOOTAHADEE has improved with each of his three runs but was clearly second best over a mile at Clairwood, four weeks ago. That said, he finished just over six lengths clear of the 3rd placed runner FATSO and could appreciate this slight drop in trip. The form of his penultimate run has worked out really well with his conqueror remaining undefeated whilst winning twice since. This colt has enough early speed to overcome his wide draw and is a big contender on his polytrack debut.

Jockey: Anton MARCUS - Trainer: Tony RIVALLAND

This is a very competitive fillies and mares handicap and the fact that 8 of the 9 rivals try this polytrack for the first time, could result in a disastrous outcome. Of course, the ratings may have little significance as they were achieved on the grass. One thing for certain is that there will be a cracking pace over this six furlong trip. CHOIR MAIDEN has already shown her class and she will profit the most from that likely blistering pace. The daughter of Choisir runs well for Marcus and she drops in class after never showing in a Grade 1, three weeks ago. She had solid form before that and boasts a strong late surge.

Race 8: BIG CAT(6)
Jockey: Sean CORMACK - Trainer: Stan ELLEY

Only 9 runners go to post for this competitive handicap but there are a few natural frontrunners that will ensure a decent gallop. BIG CAT has had two useful starts to his KZN winter campaign and the good pace will suit him perfectly. He will be cherry-ripe tonight and had experience racing under the lights on the turf track in his penultimate effort. The son of Black Minnaloushe should race just off the early pace and he is a major contender from a good draw.

Race 9: POIVRE(7) (Each Way)
Jockey: Grant V/NIEKERK - Trainer: G/K ANTHONY

POIVRE is a lightly raced three-year old colt with decent ability and he could be well ahead of the handicapper's assessment. He was poor in yielding conditions in his penultimate run and was then rest- ed for 23 weeks after another disappointing start. However, he showed plenty of promise with three cracking runs over a mile, one of which was a maiden victory over subsequent winners Nick Jagger and Flying Fellow. His two post maiden runs in competitive handicaps were very decent and the engaging of Grant van Niekerk suggests that his conditioner will have him fit and ready. The son of Silvano could have some issues so tonight's switch to the polytrack could be in his favour. He is certainly capable of upsetting.
