J&B Met 2016 – Trainer Comments

The R2.5 million J&B Met, run over the Kenilworth 2000m, looks set to be a thrilling race with the top 4 horses in the country all set to battle it out. We spoke to the trainers taking part in the big day, to get thoughts on their horse’s chances.

Cape trainer, Justin Snaith, is becoming renowned for getting his big horses all ready and primed for the big events. In Futura and Legislate he has two champions in their own right.

Justin was bubbling over with confidence about his runners. “Futura is at his top. He needed his run in the Queen’s Plate and I couldn’t be happier with him. He has a lovely draw and his jockey, Bernard Fayd’herbe, knows him very well. He has won over the course and trip and I would be disappointed if he does not fight out the finish.”

He is just as confident about his other runner Legislate. “He also needed his run in the Queen’s Plate and is now at his peak. He has a champion jockey in Piere Strydom in the saddle and I am sure he will give him a cracking ride”, said Justin.

“Both my horses are so well that I am not prepared to try and separate them”, said Justin.

Candice Robinson is a pleasure to talk to and is always enthusiastic about the stable’s horses. She was very happy about Paterfamilias. “He took his last race well when he won over 1800m and galloped very nicely last Thursday. Unfortunately, he has a wide draw which is difficult to overcome against this class of field. He is going to need luck from the draw but  could run into a place.”

Helderberg Blue is doing very well. He will enjoy this 2000m and is well drawn at 2. He will be running on at the finish and is one to include in exotic bets.”

Sean Tarry is doing amazingly well and the more success he has, the more open and sincere he is. It is plain to see that Sean has a soft spot for Gold Onyx . “His prep has gone very well. In his first run back from a break he ran very well and was running on to finish 2nd. He was badly drawn in the Queen’s Plate and raced wide. If he had a smooth run, I think he could have been two or three lengths closer to the winner. All going well he could run into the exotics.”

Sean was very cool and calm about Legal Eagle. “ People tell me he can’t lose and that he is a good bet but I don’t take any notice of those remarks. What I care about is how he is doing in work and how he is eating. Everything is going well and he has had a great prep. I am very happy with him”, concluded Sean.

Brett Crawford is having a great season and his horses all look great. Talking to him it is obvious that he has plenty of respect for Captain America who he says is very fit and well and ran a great race in the Queen’s Plate, despite the issues he had in the race. “I have great respect for Futura who I make the horse to beat and Legal Eagle who has not put a foot wrong in his races. Captain America is fit and ready for the race and I am confident of a big run from him”.

Weiho Marwing is happy with Mac De Lago‘s preparation and is hoping for a clear run for his charge. Legal Eagle is the horse to beat but if all goes well I expect a good run from my horse”.

Glen Kotzen says  “Light The Lights is a different horse after the gelding and is better than his 101 rating suggests. He is working very well after his latest win and I am hoping for a top four finish.”
