PSL: Week 24 Preview

Week 24 Preview

Our football writer previews the PSL Week 24 action which kicks off on Friday 6 March 2020.

Kaizer Chiefs returned to winning ways when they got the better of Orlando Pirates this past weekend. The table toppers face AmaZulu in what is expected to be one of the bankers. Elsewhere, Pirates travel to KZN to face an inconsistent Golden Arrows side. Let’s have a look at these and other upcoming fixtures.

Friday 6 March

Maritzburg United 15/20
Draw 24/10
Polokwane City 33/10
Fifth-placed Maritzburg head into this one off the back of a three-match winning streak and their impressive record on Friday nights at Harry Gwala Stadium is well-documented. They face a relegation-threatened Polokwane City side which has surprisingly recorded two consecutive wins which has seen them move three points clear of the relegation zone. I expect a tight encounter, but I’ll back the hosts to edge it.

Saturday 7 March

Baroka 12/10
Draw 2/1
Black Leopards 22/10
This is a massive relegation six-pointer with Baroka and Black Leopards occupying 14th and 15th place respectively. Both teams have won once in the last five games which gives this fixture markings of a dull game.

It will be interesting to see how coach Dylan Kerr copes with the pressure of facing his former team. On the other hand, coach Alan Clark is under massive pressure after a recent string of poor results. I can’t separate these sides and I foresee a share of the spoils.

Golden Arrows 23/10
Draw 21/10
Orlando Pirates 11/10
Orlando Pirates seek redemption against a Golden Arrows side which is unbeaten in the last three games with a record of two wins and a draw. The Buccaneers suffered their first regulation time defeat under Josef Zinnbauer when they went down 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs despite creating numerous goalscoring opportunities. This is a clash of two teams who thrive on attacking football and I expect a goal fest with Pirates outscoring the hosts.

Kaizer Chiefs 1/6
Draw 5/1
AmaZulu 12/1
Amakhosi edged their crosstown rivals Orlando Pirates 1-0 courtesy of a Lebohang Manyama strike and goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi produced a man of the match performance to vindicate Ernst Middendorp’s decision to sideline Itumeleng Khune.

Things aren’t going so well for bottom-placed AmaZulu as they have lost four of their last five games. Usuthu will have their work cut out for them away from home against the table toppers and I don’t think they will be able to hold their own. My money is on the home side.

Bidvest Wits 7/10
Draw 24/10
Chippa United 7/2
Bidvest Wits have been dismal in the last few weeks having only won one of their last five games and any talks of a title push from various pundits prior to that period was due to the fact that they have games in hand.

The Clever Boys have a thin squad and participating in continental competitions took a lot from them. Chippa United have just parted ways with coach Norman Mapeza who did a superb job in helping them steer clear of relegation trouble. The team has wasted no time in finding a replacement as Rulani Mokwena has been called upon to rescue the situation. I’m leaning towards Wits.

Sunday 8 March

Cape Town City 12/10
Draw 2/1
Bloemfontein Celtic 22/10
Cape Town City have been dismal this season, having won only five of their 22 games so far this season and they visit an inconsistent Celtic side which has won seven, drawn seven and lost eight. City will surely be poor, but we don’t know which Celtic side will pitch up on the day. There won’t be too many goals here and the side that capitalizes on its chances will stand a good chance of stealing it. I’ll back Celtic due to their opponents’ poor season.

Highlands Park 17/10
Draw 2/1
SuperSport United 15/10
Highlands Park snatched a draw from jaws of a win when Rodney Ramagalela’s late equalizer earned them a point at Arrows. Owen Da Gma’s men now remain unbeaten in the last four games with two wins and two draws. SuperSport United returned to winning ways and climbed up to fourth on the log when they beat Bidvest Wits 2-0 this past weekend. This is a rematch of this season’s MTN8 final where the Lions of the North came unstuck and I foresee a similar outcome.

TREBLE @ 16/1
Orlando Pirates Win 11/10
Bloem Celtic Win 22/10
SuperSport United Win 15/10
