Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: ROCK ON WOOD(8)
Jockey: MJ BYLEVELD – Trainer: Vaughan MARSHALL

ROCK ON WOOD has top credentials but the slow start cost her dearly over the c & d, last time out. She ran on powerfully despite the circumstances but failed by half a length. The daughter of Seventh Rock is obviously above-average and she has huge claims in this field but the main concern is whether she will jump on terms. She has drawn well once again.

Race 2: CAPTAIN BAGG(2)
Jockey: Grant BEHR – Trainer: Eric SANDS

CAPTAIN BAGG is an ultra-consistent sprinter with solid form and he deserved his impressive last c & d win, four weeks ago. He raced just off the speed that day and ran on well to attain the easy victory which earned him a five-pound penalty. Still, he has a couple of today’s rivals safe at the weights and could again take all the beating.

Top Bet
Race 4: EMERALD GAL(5)
Jockey: Brandon MAY – Trainer: Darryl HODGSON

EMERALD GAL is very well-bred and she was immediately rested after a disappointing second outing over the c & d in mid-April. She had posted an eye-catching debut performance when running on smartly for 2nd behind subsequent winner and highly regarded Make It Rain just twelve days earlier and is clearly above-average. The deserved break would have brought her on and the daughter of Galileo could take some beating in this field. She will enjoy a 2.5kgs apprentice allowance. The juveniles are her main dangers on paper but they could still have their work cut-out for them.

Race 5: SILVER CHALICE(1)

Jockey: Grant BEHR – Trainer: Eric SANDS

SILVER CHALICE relished the rise in distance as he made smart improvement when staying on for 3rd over ten furlongs on this track in mid-May. He moved up menacingly on that occasion suggesting that this nine furlongs could be more to his liking and the Eric Sands inmate can certainly build on that progress. He is well drawn at gate 4.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 6: PRINCE OF EDEN(9)

Jockey: Grant VAN NIEKERK – Trainer: Mike BASS

This is a tricky handicap but there could be some decent value about the lightly weighted Mike Bass-trained four-year-old gelding, PRINCE OF EDEN. The son of Silvano has been plagued with issues throughout his career but he showed plenty of promise early on and in fact, shed his maiden tag in soft underfoot conditions on debut. He has continued to tumble in the merit ratings since but is seldom very far back and finally races on what is likely to be his desired heavy conditions. His pedigree suggests that this distance won’t be an issue and without a natural pacesetter in the field, the like- ly false pace could play right into the hands of the stable elect who jumps from gate 2.
