Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: UP IN SMOKE(9)
Jockey: Keagan DE MELO - Trainer: Duncan HOWELLS

The filly UP IN SMOKE showed good improvement when she stayed on for 3rd over this trip on the grass recently and she is back facing male rivals today. She had a poor debut in her only polytrack attempt but the blinkers clearly made the difference last time and the chestnut filly can build on that run, the form of which was boosted when the runner-up Admiral's Guest won comfortably next time out.

Race 3: WARFARER(7)
Jockey: Alec FORBES - Trainer: Lezeanne FORBES

The galloping and consistent WARFARER is still improving and he caught the eye with a cracking last effort despite dropping off the speed in the home straight. He ran on strongly again for 3rd over 1900m that night and the blinkers could make a significant impact today.

Jockey: Eric S NGWANE - Trainer: Dennis BOSCH

FOUNDING FATHER prefers this surface and he had a decent handicap debut performance over shorter in his penultimate outing. Of course the Visionaire gelding blazed a trail en route to an effortless six-length c & d maiden victory prior to that and he still has good scope for progress. Interestingly, he was docked two pounds after a dismal last grass showing. The inmate from the Bosch yard is well drawn and he can raise his game in this higher level.

Race 8: UPRISE(8)
Jockey: Sean VEALE - Trainer: Dennis DRIER

UPRISE has shown promise in her two attempts to date and the daughter of Black Minnaloushe should continue to progress. She weakened late in her first try on this surface recently but would have gain- ed from the experience and she faces a weaker line-up today. The bay filly jumps from a good draw.

Jockey: Eric S NGWANE - Trainer: Dean KANNEMEYER

The fancied three-year-olds have hefty burdens to shoulder in this competitive sprint and they could find things tough. However, their fellow member GROUND BREAKER could carry the flag with his low mass of just 51kgs. The son of Miesque's Approval had progressed smartly with experience before he just got the better of subsequent runaway winner Chicago Beat (4th on handicap debut) over this c & d late last year. He had a moderate showing on the grass next time out and then fluffed his lines after racing wide two weeks ago. However, the Kannemeyer inmate will be a different proposition at this lower-level and he was recently docked five pounds. His good draw is a plus and he can cause a major upset.
