IPL 2017: Saturday 6 May Preview

Batsman_Hits_Ball

The Sunrisers, the Supergiant, the Daredevils and the Indians will all be in IPL action this Saturday.

Three of the top four teams in the IPL are in action this Saturday as cricket fans around the world prepare for a bumper day of T20 action!

The first match of the day will see the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Rising Pune Supergiant go head to head at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium before a resurgent Delhi Daredevils look to upset the table-topping Mumbai Indians. We’re set for a cracking day of cricket – let’s get to it:

SRH vs RPS | Saturday 06 May 2017 | Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Deccan | 12:30

To Win Match
Sunrisers 72/100 | Tie 35/1 | Supergiant 23/20
The first match of the day promises to be an absolute cracker, with the Sunrisers looking to arrest a dip in form which has seen them lose two of their last three games. That’ll be easier said than done against a Supergiant side who have recorded three wins on the trot.

Much of the Supergiant’s success of late has to be attributed to English all-rounder, Ben Stokes. The lanky 25-year-old became only the second Englishman to score a century in the IPL, smashing 103 off just 63 balls against the Gujarat Lions.

More recently, against the Knight Riders, the Supergiant needed a 52-ball 93 from Raul Tripathi to chase down a modest 156. While these individual performances make for a great spectacle, Stephen Flemming will want to see the rest of his loaded batting line-up pull their weight.

A loss for the Sunrisers coupled with a win for the Kings XI on Friday will leave the defending champions glancing nervously over their shoulders for the remainder of the competition. A loss last time out against the red-hot Daredevils didn’t help their cause after wins against KKR and the KXIP.

Where the Sunrisers lack a bit in consistency, they more than make up for in individual talent. Both the purple and orange caps sit atop the heads of players clad in black and orange. David Warner has been in a different galaxy altogether with the bat in the competition. His 489 competition runs have come at a strike rate of 150.46.

His supporting cast aren’t too bad either with Kane Williamson, Shikhar Dhawan and Yuvraj Singh all of whom are averaging more than 30 in the competition. Bowling wise, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has set the competition alight once again.

The Indian seamer has bagged 21 wickets in 10 matches and returned a staggeringly good economy rate of 6.62. Seriously, having a seamer that is able to restrict scoring and take wickets – especially in the Power Play overs – is invaluable.

Keep an eye on the young Afghan leggie, Rashid Khan. His debut season in the competition has been nothing short of sensational.  He’s returned a competition economy rate of 6.82 while bagging 12 wickets in the process. Warner has employed him inside of the Power Play a few time this season, it’ll be interesting to see how he’s used against such a strong batting line-up.

Verdict: Sunrisers 72/100
The Supergiant have been heavily reliant on individual batting performances to drag them over the line of late. I fully expect a more balanced Sunrisers side to get the better of them, especially in Hyderabad where Warner and his charges have yet to taste defeat.

DD vs MI | Saturday 6 May 2017 | Feroz Shah Kotla, New Delhi | 16:30

To Win Match
Daredevils 5/4 | Tie 35/1 | Indians 67/100
It’s refreshing to see – especially from and Indian perspective – that this Daredevils side is being propelled forward by a number of young local batsmen. Risbah Pant, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer have all been superb when called upon.

Pant and Samson thrilled fans at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Thursday evening as their 143-run second wicket partnership helped their side breeze past the Gujarat Lions total of 208 with more than two overs to spare.

Keep in mind though, that they’ll be coming up against arguably the best bowling attack in the competition on Saturday. I don’t really have to mention how good the trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga and Mitchell McClenaghan are.

While their bowling attack is packed to the brim with talent, their top and middle order have been excellent throughout the season. The fact that Rohit Sharma has hit some form toward the end of the regular season will take a lot of pressure of Parthiv Patel, Jos Buttler and Nitish Rana.

Verdict: Delhi Daredevils 5/4
The Daredevils have been outstanding of late, absolutely mowing down massive totals in their last two matches to keep their slim hopes of a play-off alive. The Indians on the other hand, have been a picture of consistency this term and are full value for their position atop the standings.
