Aviva Premiership: Newcastle v Leicester Preview

Rugby players pack down for scrum

The high-flying Newcastle Falcons will take on fellow top six occupants the Leicester Tiger this Sunday in what should be a titanic affair.

Northern England's finest will be looking to entrench their position in the top four when they take on a solid Leicester Tigers outfit at Kingston Park. Only two points separate the sides on the Aviva Premiership table with the hosts currently occupying the last semi-final position and the visitors in sixth place.

This game will also be your quintessential clash of styles with Newcastle playing an attack-minded brand of rugby and Leicester opting for a more reserved approach.

Newcastle Falcons v Leicester Tigers | Sunday 29 October |  Kingston Park | 16:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Newcastle 19/20 | Draw 17/1 | Leicester 9/10

Falcons fans will be delighted with their side's start to the domestic campaign which has seen the men from Newcastle claim four wins from six fixtures with their losses coming against heavyweights Saracens and Exeter. They have shown they can mix it with the big boys in the 'comp, however, as they beat an in-form Bath side 32-33 at the Recreation Ground in late-September.

Key to the Falcons fast start to the campaign has been their potent backline. New signing and Canadian international, DTH van der Merve, has been a revalation while experienced fullback Alex Tait has arguably hit the best form of his career at the age of 29. These two men have played a vital role in Newcastle securing four try-scoring bonus points.

In terms of recent form, the hosts head into this one off the back of a highly impressive 20-21 victory over Top 14 outfit, the Bordeaux Begles. They also beat the Dragons in another Challenge Cup affair the week prior to their trip across the English Channel. As such, the men from Newcastle will be full of confidence headed into this one.

The Tigers have enjoyed a rock solid start to their campaign with their exceptional defence seeing them to four victories from six outings, The Tigers two defeats this term came against Northampton and Bath but they have really turned the corner since then and even managed to beat defending champions Exeter.

Summer signings George Ford and Jonny May have been crucial to the Leicester outfits swing in fortunes. Both men are completely bedded in now and we can expect big performances from them this Saturday, especially May who has been in magnificent try-scoring form.

Like their opponents, the Tigers come into this one off the back of two European fixtures. Both of their games were against French opposition. They went down by just four points to a star-studded side Racing Metro in the opening round of the Champions Cup but managed to claim revenge over the French the following week as they dismantled Castres.

Verdict: Newcastle 19/20
This is an extremely tough game to call as both sides are just so evenly matched. I just think Newcastle have a slight edge being at home. And for that reason, I'll be having a small strike on the Falcons to claim the win here.
