Aviva Premiership: Sale Sharks v Northampton Saints Preview

The 10th placed Sale Sharks take on eighthplaced Northampton Saints at the AJ Bell Stadium on Saturday the 25th of November.

Sale will be looking to arrest their poor start to the season when they take on a Northampton outfit that has struggled for form over the past month. With only five points separating the two sides on the Premiership standings, this game could have a massive bearing on who secures a European berth next term.

Sale Sharks
The Sharks really have struggled to bag wins this term despite putting in some solid displays against the League's big boys. Steve Diamond's men simply haven't enjoyed the rub of the green losing out by the narrowest of margins to a plethora of sides due to an errant bounce of the ball or an unjust penalty.

The side from the North of England currently find themselves in 10th spot on the log, having only managed two wins from their opening eight games. They will need to up that win ratio drastically if they are to stand a chance of securing a European Challenge Cup berth next season.

The hosts for this weekend come into this one off the back of a 35-27 loss to the Leicester Tigers. This was another fixture that Sale had every chance of winning as they lead the game 20-22 at the half-time break. Ill-discipline and poorly timed lapses of concentration put pain to that, with the Sharks only able to add five points to their half-time score while Leicester managed to accumulate 15.

Northampton Saints
The Saints are also experiencing a rather dour season and find themselves some eleven points off table-toppers, Saracens. The men from Northampton have been hard hit by injuries this term which has had a massive effect on their results. They have lost their last three domestic matches with their last victory coming against Harlequins at the close of September.

The visitors also come into this one off the back of a rather large 30-15 defeat to the eleventh placed Worcester Warriors. This loss would have been hard to stomach for all Northampton Rugby stakeholders, who would have expected so much more from their talented side against relative cannon-fodder like Worcester.

Verdict: Sale Sharks 1/4
This certainly isn't the world's most exciting tip, but Sale should make light work of a Northampton side missing a plethora of stalwarts due to injury and international commitments. My money is on the hosts' 9/10 axis of Faf de Klerk and James O'Connor spearheading them to a win.
