Ram Slam T20 Challenge: Hollywoodbets Dolphins vs WSB Cape Cobras Preview

Batsman Hits Ball

We preview Friday's Ram Slam T20 Challenge match between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the WSB Cape Cobras.

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the WSB Cape Cobras will clash for the second time this season in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge on Friday evening.

A magnificent century from Sarel Erwee secured victory for the KZN franchise on the opening weekend. The Cobras, however, will arrive in Durban in confident mood off the back of three consecutive wins.

Hollywoodbets Dolphins
It’s difficult to speak about the Hollywoodbets Dolphins as they really haven’t played much of late with both of their last two matches abandoned due to rain. The last time they took to the field was in Potchefstroom against the Lions.

Even though they lost that game by six wickets, the bowlers did brilliantly well to make the Highveld franchise sweat. In the end, a brilliant clip through mid-wicket by Wiaan Mulder got Geoffrey Toyana’s men the three runs they needed to win the game.

The big news coming out of the KZN franchise’s camp is the return of Vaughn van Jaarsveld. The big-hitting left-hander has been in sensational form in the domestic First-Class competition and will be desperate to translate that form into the shortest format.

Whether or not he starts remains to be seen. Grant Morgan won’t want to tinker with his top five of Morne van Wyk, Sarel Erwee, Dane Vilas, Khaya Zondo and Sibonelo Makhanya. They’ve put in good displays this season and are unlikely to be dropped, which could necessitate a change in the bowlers.

Prenelan Subrayen is most likely to make way if this is the case. Keshav Maharaj and Imran Tahir will be in the side as specialist spinners while Zondo and Makhanya will play as part time options. With all of these options on the field, you really don’t need a third out and out spinner.

WSB Cape Cobras
Following a dreadful start to their Ram Slam T20 Challenge campaign, they’ve won three on the trot with JP Duminy and Hashim Amla scoring runs for fun. Again, the worry you have is who gets the runs if the two Protea stalwarts fail?

Richard Levi has been awful this season while Temba Bavuma has battled in arguably his least favourite format of the game. Aviwe Mgijima has also struggled after starting the season well against the Dolphins on the opening weekend at SuperSport Park Centurion.

One area where the Cape franchise has improved is with ball in hand. As much was evidenced in their three-wicket win over the VKB Knights on Wednesday. The opening duo of Vernon Philander and Rory Kleinveldt were brilliant and kept Grant Mokoena and Leus du Plooy very, very honest.

Ferisco Adams also delivered another cracking performance. The Boland stalwart has starred for the franchise this season after being given a chance to shine at this level. If Ashwell Prince and his charges are to go all the way this season, he’ll play a massive role.

Verdict: Hollywoodbets Dolphins 72/100
I’m a bit apprehensive here as the Dolphins haven’t played in a while due to poor weather. The return of van Jaarsveld will bolster an already world-class top order who will be looking to impress on home turf.
